Prof. Bhabatosh Das' lab at BRIC-Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) has sequenced the whole genome of Megasphaera elsdenii, isolated from the stool sample of a healthy Indian subject. This genomic analysis provides valuable insights into M. elsdenii's ability to ferment various carbohydrates and organic acids, producing short-chain #fattyacids. M. elsdenii is crucial in maintaining microbial balance within the gut, regulating pH, and modulating #immune responses. Understanding the #genomic features of M. elsdenii will aid in developing synbiotics to improve gut health. #ODOG #Immunity Rajesh Gokhale Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India CSIR India Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) India DST BRIC-Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) Institute of Life Sciences Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (BRIC-inStem) National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) National Brain Research Centre BRIC-NCCS Pune BRIC-National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) BRIC-National Institute of Biomedical Genomics BRIC-National Institute of Immunology BRIC - National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR RGCB - Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology Regional Centre for Biotechnology

#OneDayOneGenome Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae, spreads through contaminated food/water and can lead to severe dehydration and death if untreated. Prof. Bhabatosh Das' lab at BRIC-Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) sequenced V. cholerae strain IDH08148 from a patient, providing insights into its evolving genome and implications for disease severity and management. #Cholera #VibrioCholerae #Genomics #PublicHealth Accession numbers: GCA_004309765.1 (NCBI) INGCA000000190 (hashtag #IBDC) Indian Biological Data Centre, Regional Centre for Biotechnology, Faridabad Rajesh Gokhale Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) CSIR India MyGov India BRIC-Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) Institute of Life Sciences Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine (BRIC-inStem) National Brain Research Centre BRIC-NCCS Pune BRIC-National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB) BRIC-National Institute of Biomedical Genomics BRIC-National Institute of Immunology RGCB - Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology Regional Centre for Biotechnology

"Fighting Pests with RNAi: A New Hope for Maize Farmers" Fall Armyworm is a devastating insect pest for maize and many other crops, causing huge losses for #farmers in India and worldwide. Traditional pest control methods rely heavily on chemical pesticides, which harm the environment and human health, and often lose effectiveness as pests develop resistance. This study by Vadassery lab at BRIC - National Institute of Plant Genome Research - NIPGR in collaboration with ICAR- Indian Council of Agricultural Research-IIMR, Ludhiana, uses a promising new solution: RNA interference (RNAi), a method that targets specific genes in insect pests, making them unable to grow or reproduce properly. #Researchers focused on three important genes in the Fall Armyworm—responsible for vital processes like protein transport and detoxifying harmful substances. When these genes were "silenced" using #RNAi, the pests showed slower growth, higher death rates, and fewer offspring. Some even started cannibalizing each other! The scientists also tested this approach by external application of RNAi constructs to #maize leaves. The results showed, pests ate less, grew poorly, and showed unusual behaviors, making this method a potential game-changer for pest control. This eco-friendly strategy could reduce pesticide use and offer farmers a sustainable way to save their crops. With further research, RNAi-based pesticides and pest control might soon become a solution for #farming challenges and a part of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Rajesh Gokhale

Human Microbiome Research facility of BRIC-National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, isolated Klebsiella pneumonia NIBMG_HMR_27 from chronic diabetic foot ulcer. This bacterium is known for producing thick polysaccharide capsules that shield it from immune defenses and its remarkable ability to resist antibiotics. These molecular adaptations make K. pneumoniae a resilient and virulent pathogen, posing significant challenges in wound care and infection management. Genome sequencing will aid in early diagnosis and the development of effective treatment regimens for chronic wound healing.
