Making a world of difference for animals and people
About us
Our mission is to end the human/street dog conflict by creating a humane and sustainable environment for animals with direct benefits to the people of Dharamsala, India. We provide several key programs to achieve our goals: spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, rescue and adoption, street animal feeding, and community education for rabies safety and compassion. Our vision is to teach the community to treat the stray animal population as a local problem that can be managed with compassion and education. We are teaching the locals to view animals as part of the community as opposed to pests who are diseased and unwanted.

Since founding Dharamsala Animal Rescue in 2008, we have always dreamed of creating a program to educate and raise awareness in our community. No matter how many dogs we rescue, sterilize, or vaccinate, we’ve known in our hearts that true change requires MORE —it demands a shift in how people think and feel. Without addressing the conditioning against street dogs and misconceptions and fears, the cycle of suffering will never truly end. In our last two education programs of the year, we encountered a heartbreaking truth. We met local folk who believe that street dogs are dangerous and should be avoided at all costs—a painful reminder of the stigma these innocent animals face every day. As the year comes to a close, we’re so proud to share that our dream finally came true and we were able to launch and run our official education program, Karuna (Compassion) that 545 people have attended learning, understanding and taking steps toward creating a safer and happier future for animals and humans alike. We have also completed 3 road safety awareness murals in accident prone areas to stem the increase in hit and run cases. None of this would have been possible without you. 🙏🏼 By supporting DAR, you’ve done more than help us rescue sick and injured dogs—you’ve joined us in driving the behavioral change needed to end suffering for good. Thank you for giving us hope—and for believing in compassion. 🙏🏼 To learn more visit this link: https://lnkd.in/g-zGPyqG

It’s our Vet’s birthday!! 🥳 All year round, this wonderful person saves lives, repairs broken limbs, heals hearts, and can casually pull out sharp bones stuck in tiny throats, while petting 6 dogs at once! We’re so grateful to be blessed to have a wonderful doctor who is genuinely empathetic toward dogs, is gentle and kind and never too exhausted to help or advise or just smile & share a joke. Medical wiz aside, the comfort he provides speaks volumes about his soft heart and core skills. We are forever grateful! 🫂🧡 Don’t know how he does it. 😌 Please join us in wishing talented, tireless, totally cool, Doctor Shaheem the best day and year ahead! 🧁

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A SPONSOR! Meet some of our newest resident dogs at DAR, Mochi, Buldak, Julie, and Rosa. All of these pups are considered not adoptable locally, and would not survive on the street. As you can see, poor Mochi is missing most of his nose. Old man Buldak was a pet and was dumped on the street full of wounds and warts. Sweet Julie once had a feeder who one day decided to shoo her from her house when she was weak with mange. And 9 month old Rosa was run down by a car as a tiny puppy and needed a life-saving amputation. Today, they all can feel save at loved at DAR, but they need sponsors! For just small monthly donation, you can provide all they need to live their lives at DAR! To learn more and to see all of our resident dogs please go to this link: https://lnkd.in/d4Pn4Q5h PS - Sponsorships make great gifts for your animal loving friends.
