Cost of EV battery replacement soon to be less than fixing gas engine The cost of replacing an EV battery is one of the major reasons for EVs being less preferred over ICE, however, a recent study says that by 2030 it’ll be at par with the cost of replacing an ICE engine, i.e. a 75kWh battery will cost approx. $3375, & treason being the downturn in battery metal prices, which holds 60% of the battery cost. According to CEA, the global LIB market will be oversupplied till 2028. Story Insights by Shreyanshi Pandey Prices of EV batteries are expected to drop due to factors like declining commodity costs, cheaper battery chemistries, and economies of scale in production. An oversupply of Li-ion batteries could further reduce global prices, making EVs more affordable and accelerating adoption. This price reduction will significantly impact the EV industry, making electric vehicles more competitive against internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. For the global market, it will foster greater EV adoption, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and support sustainability goals. In India, it could lead to faster EV market growth, offering affordable options to consumers, boosting local production, and creating opportunities for Indian EV OEMs to expand their market presence and export potential. This helps the Indian vehicle industry to transition towards sustainable energy instead of depending on imported fossil fuel. Allocation of 500MW/1000MW battery storage at 2.26 Lakh/MW/month-GUVNL The price of the tender got 4.6% less than INR 2.37 Lakh/MW/month. The GUVNL will enter in Battery Energy Storage purchase agreement. Winners include HG Infra Engineering (250 MW), Bhilwara Energy (100 MW), Kintech Synergy (100 MW), and Advait Infratech (50 MW). The BESS developers will select Build own operates to provide facility to GUVNL. Story Insights by Shreyanshi Pandey The tender by GUVNL was announced with an aim to enhance grid stability and enable more effective integration of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, into the state's power grid. The introduction of Viability Gap Funding (VGF) has been pivotal in lowering tariffs for these projects, making energy storage more financially viable and attractive for developers. The lowest tariff discovered in this auction—₹2.259 lakh per MW per month—sets a new benchmark for BESS pricing, potentially leading to more cost-effective and scalable energy storage projects across India. This will also stimulate further investment in energy storage, opening up opportunities for Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) and state distribution companies (DISCOMs) to enhance grid resilience and reduce curtailment of renewable energy, while improving power supply reliability. For investors, this tender offers a clear pathway to participate in the growing energy storage sector, leveraging favorable government policies. The tender's success could have a significant impact on India’s renewable energy sector by increasing storage capacity, facilitating higher RE integration, and helping meet ambitious renewable energy targets. Green Hydrogen Cost Set to Drop as Electrolyser Prices Fall Cost of Green Hydrogen in India is expected to drop to $2.1 per kg by 2029-2030 due to a significant reduction in electrolyser prices & efficiency improvements, coupled with supportive government policies. Momentum of Green Hydrogen (GH2) in India will be driven by lower Renewable Energy costs and the country’s decarbonisation goals. Still, substantial investment is required to become more viable. Story Insights by Shreyanshi Pandey Driven by faster renewable energy adoption and India’s target to achieve its decarbonization goals, the Green Hydrogen Sector is expected to play a major role in hard-to-abate industries but its large-scale adoption depends on the lower levelized cost of hydrogen. Currently, LCOH of green hydrogen is about 1.75 times that of grey hydrogen and around 1.50 times that of brown hydrogen which makes it economically less viable. In upcoming years, the LCOH of GH2 is expected to decrease due to cent drop in electrolyzer prices and a 12% -14% improvement in efficiency which will facilitate its adoption. PLI incentives announced by the Indian government will help to help achieve targeted LCOH. The reduced cost will help the steel industry, refineries, and the aviation sector to use green hydrogen as their fuel. Lower cost will present India as a lucrative supplier for green hydrogen achieving India’s goal of leading in the export of green hydrogen and will help domestic players in this value chain. Li-I battery gets a new alternative, Li-S battery, one with twice the capacity Engineers of Monash University, Victoria develop an ultra-fast charging Li-S batteries, capable of powering long-haul EVs and drones. For an EV, the Li-S batteries can power an extra 1000 km on a single charge and also have reduced charging time to a few hours. The Li-S batteries are greener and much cheaper, a well fit for the Indian market. Ghove Energy is currently raising pre-seed funding. Story Insights by Mansi Singh The development of ultra-fast charging lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries addresses the growing global demand for more efficient, lightweight, and long-lasting energy storage solutions, especially in industries like electric vehicles (EVs), aviation, and drones, which require both high energy density and rapid recharging. This breakthrough promises to significantly enhance battery performance by enabling EVs to travel longer distances—up to 1,000 km on a single charge—and drastically reduce charging times, making electric transportation more practical for long-haul journeys. It also opens new possibilities for sustainable aviation, particularly in the burgeoning eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) sector, where weight and fast charging are crucial. For India, where there is an increasing push for electric mobility to combat pollution and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, this innovation could accelerate the transition to clean energy solutions, helping to expand EV infrastructure and foster economic growth through new manufacturing and technology development opportunities. Furthermore, the commercialization of these advanced batteries offers significant opportunities for investment and the development of cutting-edge industries, positioning countries like India at the forefront of the global green energy revolution. Need of Energy Storage Tester- Said NITI Aayog Member NITI Aayog member V K Saraswat emphasized the need for nationally accredited testing facilities for Battery Energy Storage Systems to support India's clean energy transition. Speaking at FICCI's Energy Storage Conference 2024, he highlighted gaps in testing infrastructure as India aims for 238 GWh of BESS by 2030. He also advocated for third-party certification and universal storage standards. Story Insights by Shreyanshi Pandey India faces significant challenges in advancing BESS despite the presence of established standards, primarily due to a lack of adequate testing and certification infrastructure. This gap makes it difficult to verify compliance with standards, which is essential for ensuring the safety, performance, and reliability of storage systems, and to address this, India needs to establish accredited testing facilities and authorize third-party testing until dedicated certification agencies are in place. Growth of BESS in the country also requires a focus on research and development, boosting local manufacturing capabilities, and implementing uniform policies across states. Challenges such as high capital costs and fragmented regulations must be overcome to facilitate faster adoption. Efforts to improve testing infrastructure, encourage innovation, and support local manufacturing will enhance the integration of BESS with renewable energy, improve grid stability, and accelerate India's clean energy transition. These steps will create vast opportunities for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of BESS, positioning them as key players in both the domestic and global energy storage markets, while supporting the nation’s renewable energy growth.
