On 9th December 2024, FISH organized an online knowledge-sharing webinar with the participation of SHP developers, machinery suppliers, and service providers. The topic of the webinar was "The Role of Automation in Modern SHP." The session was conducted by Ms. Anubhuti Bansal, Technical Director at CrestoTechnisis Private Limited, and moderated by Mr. Sumeet Mazumdar, CEO of FISH.  Ms. Anubhuti, an MTech graduate from IIT Roorkee, brings over 17 years of experience in the field of hydropower. She has played a key role in the design, engineering, and commissioning of automation and electrical systems for hydro power plants, as well as in IIOT (Industrial Internet of Things). Her expertise extends to over 25 successfully designed and commissioned projects across India, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the USA.  The webinar was attended by more than 35 participants. The 45-minute presentation covered various aspects of automation, including design features, benefits, and approaches for new projects and in retrofitting and upgrading existing systems. During the 30-minute Q&A session that followed, participants actively engaged in seeking clarifications on challenges they face in their power stations and explored potential improvements.  FISH remains committed to fostering collaboration among SHP stakeholders for the all-around development of the sector.  We extend our gratitude to Ms. Anubhuti and all participants for an engaging and insightful session. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Energy Management Centre (EMC), Kerala organized a National Seminar on Small Hydropower Plants on Aug 08, 2024 at Hotel Vivanta Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. The initiative was undertaken by BIS’s newly formed committee WRD 29, Water resources division. Kerala is a state with a sizeable fleet of Small Hydropower Projects in operation, while there is the potential to install many more, as the state is hilly and has plentiful water resources. So, the Seminar was much appreciated and was well attended by more than a hundred participants from all segments of stakeholders including MNRE, various power utilities, industry, state level policy makers, SHP federations and associations like FISH and REDAK, academia and consultants. Shri K.R Jyothilal, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala graced the occasion as the chief guest and enlightened the audience about policy initiatives and prospects in the state. He touched upon all areas of interest in the power mix including SHPs, Hydrogen, PSPs and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Dr. Sangita Kasture, Advisor MNRE, Shri. K.K. Pant, Deputy DG BIS and Shri Dushyant Prajapati, Head WRD addressed the participants and delegates during the inaugural session and spoke of the importance of the SHP sector, as well as the much-needed standardization in this area. The topics of discussion were grouped into three technical sessions viz. (1) Role of Standardization in SHPs chaired by Professor Arun Kumar, IIT, HRED, Roorkee (2) Challenges in SHP Development chaired by Professor S.K Singhal, IIT, HRED, Roorkee and (3) SHP Development- the way forward chaired by Sh. S.K Shahi, Scientist E, MNRE. These sessions were attended by various industry experts. Each panel discussion was followed by lively QA session with wide participation.
