Spending time in Balasore with Fermoscapes was an immersive dive into traditional craftsmanship. I didn’t just document; I observed, questioned, and absorbed the nuances of materials, techniques, and cultural heritage. Working closely with artisans gave me hands-on experience in understanding natural fibers, their transformation, and the storytelling embedded in every crafted piece. It deepened my appreciation for sustainability, ethical craftsmanship, and the challenges artisans face in preserving their legacy. This journey reinforced my belief that design is not just about aesthetics but about honoring traditions and bridging them with innovation

And fast deliveries. Most of the products there are made of plastic. Or have some percentage of plastic. They were probably made in a huge factory. Where workers are overworked. And probably underpaid. Fermoscapes has an alternative for that. It works with artisans. More than 90% of them are women. They use sustainable materials. Sourced from all across India. Just because a brand says they recycle - doesn't mean they are not contributing to plastic waste If we decide, for example, right now, to stop the use of plastic in these two industries, we would have already solved 50 percent of the problem … Can you imagine? Recycling is not a panacea for plastic pollution. Can’t people just recycle plastic? Won’t that help? Apparently, it’s the reverse. Recycling is a part of the problem. Research out of Scotland suggests that the chopping, shredding and washing of plastic in recycling facilities turns as much as six to 13 percent of incoming waste into microplastics—tiny, toxic particles that are an emerging and ubiquitous environmental health concern for the planet and people. Today, health scientists reveal that there is a link between plastic pollution – the microplastic that we ingest and breathe – and some diseases like cancer, infertility, cardiovascular disease, endometriosis etc. An average person ingests five grams of microplastic per week. Well, it has been found in everything from tap water to table salt. The only way to actually ensure we are living a plastic free life - is when we truly become plastic free.
