🌊 Gujarat Maritime University at ISWAN Seminar 2024: A Step Forward for Seafarer Welfare 🌊 Gujarat Maritime University proudly participated in the ISWAN Seminar 2024, held on 28th November 2024, focusing on the critical theme of "Seafarers: Supported, Empowered, Connected." The seminar witnessed the participation of the Directorate General of Shipping along with esteemed dignitaries, policymakers, and maritime experts from various countries. Their insights enriched the discussions, fostering a collaborative environment to address pressing issues faced by seafarers globally. One of the highlights was the launch and presentation of a groundbreaking joint study conducted by Gujarat Maritime University (GMU) and the International Seafarers' Welfare & Assistance Network (ISWAN) on "The Impact of Recruitment Fraud on Indian Seafarers." This comprehensive research, led by Dr. Mohit Gupta, along with Dr. Abhay Singh Thakur and Mr. Jobin Abraham Mathew, was carried out under the expert guidance of our Hon’ble Provost, Prof (Dr) Sanjeevi Shanthakumar The report uncovers how unscrupulous agents exploit seafarers, trapping thousands in cycles of debt, dangerous working conditions, and professional uncertainty. Dr. Mohit Gupta presented the detailed findings of this pivotal research and participated in the panel discussion during the seminar, providing valuable insights into the study's implications and recommendations. Prof. Dr. Tanuja Kaushik, Dean Academic affairs delivered a compelling address, emphasizing GMU's unwavering commitment to advancing seafarer welfare through research, collaboration, and actionable solutions. GMU was also represented by Dr. Chandra Kant U. and Ms. Shalini . whose active participation enriched the discussions and showcased the university’s dedication to addressing pressing maritime challenges. This seminar marks another milestone in GMU’s mission to contribute to the maritime sector through impactful research and meaningful collaborations.
