Is your store management unknowingly costing you success? Here's how we identified critical gaps in a grocery startup’s operations. We were recently approached by a small grocery startup to assess its newly opened store. The startup had been primarily operating online and was now venturing into offline retail. The goal was to identify issues affecting the store’s operations. And what we discovered was a problem perhaps present in most early-stage startups and even midsize companies. During our visit, our experts started with a basic evaluation and asked the store manager a few general questions about the store’s operations. This discussion revealed some critical gaps in the store’s management and its overall business strategy. 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: The store manager couldn’t even provide the basic information, such as the total value of the stocks or the number of Stock Keeping Units (SKUs) available in the store. Even more concerning was the absence of any plan to build up the inventory, as the shelves were nearly empty despite the store being newly opened. 𝗡𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 (𝗦𝗢𝗣𝘀): Upon deeper investigation, it became clear that the startup had no standardized SOP in place for key operations such as inventory planning and SKU selection for the first restock. Industries like grocery and pharma retail have more than 50,000-60,000 active SKUs, so having a structured inventory planning process is essential to ensure that the store is well-stocked with relevant products that meet customer demand. 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: Another alarming revelation was the lack of communication between the store team and leadership. It seemed that the leadership was largely out of the store opening process, leaving the staff to manage with minimal guidance. Ownership is often overlooked at the leadership level, yet it’s an important KPI for any P&L head.
