  • 🏗️ Critical Infrastructure Challenge: Beyond the Asbestos Crisis in India The recent revelations about asbestos usage in India demand more than just awareness—they require systemic accountability and leadership. While the statistics are alarming (44% global asbestos imports, rising by 29% annually), the deeper issue lies in our governance and decision-making processes. Our administrators and policymakers seem trapped in a cycle of short-term thinking, prioritizing cost-effectiveness over public health. Key Observations: - Sustainable building materials are abundantly available in the market - Despite knowing asbestos's carcinogenic properties, we continue importing from countries like Russia and Brazil - The general public remains largely uninformed about the hidden health risks in construction materials Critical Questions for Our Leadership: 1. Why do we persist with hazardous materials when safer alternatives exist? 2. How can we transform our construction industry to prioritize human health? 3. What accountability mechanisms can we implement to protect workers and citizens? Potential Action Steps: - Mandatory transparency in construction material sourcing - Comprehensive public education campaigns - Stricter regulations on importing known health hazards - Investment in local, safe building material production The solution isn't just about banning a material—it's about reimagining our approach to infrastructure, health, and sustainable development. #PublicHealth #Sustainability #InfrastructureSafety #IndianIndustry What are your thoughts on transforming our construction landscape? Let's discuss solutions.

Helping health tech startups raise $1M-$3M | Helped 15+ startups raise $30M+ in digital health, medtech and biotech.

The air inside your home might be as dangerous as the polluted streets outside. Why? Because asbestos — a material banned in over 60 countries for being a known carcinogen — is still used in India. In fact, we import 44% of the world’s asbestos. And just last year, our imports rose by 29%, despite the known dangers. Asbestos is everywhere: - In cement - In our roofs - Brake parts - Flooring tiles And almost every building you step into. The cost of this reliance? - 6 million potential disease cases - Over 600,000 predicted cancer cases - Families losing loved ones to preventable diseases The irony is that we banned asbestos mining in 1993. Yet, we remain the world’s largest importer, sourcing "safe" asbestos from Russia and Brazil. What’s worse is the complete lack of safety for workers: - No mandatory protection gear - Zero monitoring of exposure - Minimal health tracking Construction workers unknowingly breathe in asbestos fibres daily. And it’s not just workers. Asbestos dust lingers in homes, schools, and workplaces, quietly putting everyone at a higher cancer risk. Even medical advancement in cancer diagnosis won't help us if we don't eradicate the root cause. And the cancers it causes are known to be uncurable too. Gopal Krishna of the Ban Asbestos Network puts it best: "Almost every home in India contains asbestos. None of us are truly safe." So, what’s the way forward? 1. Awareness: Educating people about the dangers of asbestos exposure 2. Regulation: Enforcing a ban on its import and use, like the 60+ countries that prioritise health over profit 3. Protection: Equipping workers with safety gear and monitoring their health The air we breathe, both outside and inside, should not be a death sentence. It’s time for India to take action - and stop risking lives over cheap construction. If this post resonated with you, repost it to spread awareness. The more people who know, the louder our collective voice becomes. Do you know if there's asbestos in your tiles and walls? #entrepreneurship #health #asbestos

Chandrashekhar Mandal, hailing from the rural village of Ami, Bihar, knows poverty firsthand. Growing up in an area with limited education, he witnessed the struggles of his family and community, especially those in blue-collar jobs. Driven by a desire to empower daily wage laborers, Chandrashekhar envisioned a world where they wouldn't have to wait on street corners for work. This vision took shape during his early days at a finance job in Delhi. While sipping coffee on a rainy afternoon, he saw a stark contrast: his comfortable office space versus the struggles of daily wage workers seeking shelter from the monsoon at a nearby labor chowk. This scene reminded him of his childhood in Bihar and the hardships his relatives faced searching for work. A question ignited within him—"In this digital age, why can't we revolutionize the way daily wage workers find jobs?" From that question, Digital Labour Chowk was born. This innovative platform connects employers with skilled laborers, eliminating the instability that comes with finding jobs the traditional way. In just three years, the company has provided steady income to over one lakh daily wage laborers, transforming lives. #processsafetyindia #nationalsafetycouncil Attending a global meet on Process Safety under the aegis of Centre for Chemicals Process Safety of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers at Mumbai at Jioworld Centre. Interesting to note that this premier forum for process safety was created in the aftermath of the terrible Bhopal Gas Tragedy in our own country. There is an urgent need as listed below for India to strengthen its institutional support for Process Safety. 1. 45% of Indian manufacturing is process industry whether it is food pharma petroleum or hazardous chemicals. 2.Our engineering curriculum including in chemical industry talks very little about process safety. 3. National safety council formed under ministry of labour in 1966 focuses primarily on human welfare without going into the causes of incidents. There are programs on industrial safety and road safety but very little for the process industry. It is therefore the right time to strengthen the National Safety Council probably moving it concurrently under Industry and Chemicals ministry and creating centres of excellence in process safety standards , assurance and investigation capabilities , linking them with global safety institutes and engineering bodies to take the process safety practice to am more mature level. There is also need for intervention from the UGC or the body governing Engieering Courses in terms of including safety and sustainability in the core curriculum of Engineering. 80% of safety, sustainability and cost performance of a plant is already “Sealed” at the Design Stage. Very thought provoking conference and essential for the Indian Chemical Industry.

🔍 **The Power of Participation: Unlocking Workplace Safety through Voluntary Safety Committees** In the realm of workplace safety, the debate between mandated and voluntary safety committees is crucial. A noteworthy study by Michael F. O'Toole sheds light on this topic by scrutinizing six manufacturing plants across diverse industries over a decade. This research highlights an essential insight: the effectiveness of safety committees lies in employee participation, rather than obligatory legislation. Key findings demonstrate that both mandatory and voluntary safety committee implementations significantly bolster safety outcomes. However, it's the active involvement of employees in these committees that truly drives down injury rates. Industries like gypsum wallboard manufacturing, paint and coatings production, and metal forming have all shown marked improvements in safety records thanks to engaged safety committees. This study compels us to rethink our approach to workplace safety. By fostering an environment where employees feel encouraged to actively participate in safety initiatives, organizations can achieve superior safety results, mitigating risks more effectively than through regulations alone. 💬 What are your thoughts on enhancing safety culture in the workplace through voluntary participation? Have you seen similar results in your industry? Let's discuss how we can cultivate safer work environments together! #WorkplaceSafety #EmployeeEngagement #SafetyCulture
