About us

Harithkram, the Environment Society of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College was inaugurated by the eminent Environmentalist and Writer Padma Shri Sunita Narain on September 7, 2012. Its mission is to create Environmental Awareness and promote green and sustainable activities in and around the college. It develops and channelizes the creative ideas of the young and potential environmentalists towards a greener world via team building. The society focuses primarily on sensitizing the students on environmental issues. Our aim is that an increasing number of students showcase deep interest towards the environment and make Harithkram not just any other society, but a forum for constructive discussions and debates on any and every green cause. The society has been actively involved in participating in eco-campaigns organized by the Delhi Government. This society is guided by the core conviction that young people are a powerful and untapped force that can bring about a positive change in their communities and nations. Such a force is essential to bring about a paradigm change in our society. It is a medium for us to direct our unbounded zeal and energy towards making a healthy and stable society.

  • Celebrated on the third Saturday of February every year, World Pangolin Day is a day dedicated to making efforts for the conservation and protection of these unique mammals. Despite their general adorability and uniqueness, pangolins face numerous dangers, primarily owing to poaching for their scales, which cover them from the head to the toes; flesh and even teeth, which are used extensively in East Asian traditional medicine. Pangolins face major challenges, being the most illegally trafficked and smuggled animal in the world. Pangolins are unique not just in terms of their looks but are also a unique part of the ecosystems which they are a part of, as they keep control of the insect populations, thus helping other animals and plants in return. World Pangolin day presents an opportunity for us every year, to chip in our bit to protect these beautiful creatures through various means. It's humans who have harmed them, and it is us, who are now responsible for their safety. #WorldPangolinDay #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries

  • Hippos are a vital part of freshwater ecosystems, helping maintain the balance of rivers and wetlands. However, they face increasing threats such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. This World Hippopotamus Day (February 15), let’s take a moment to recognize their ecological importance and the urgent need for conservation efforts. Protecting hippos not only ensures their survival but also safeguards the wetlands and water bodies that support countless other species, including humans. Conservation initiatives, habitat protection, and sustainable practices can help secure a better future for these remarkable creatures. By raising awareness and taking action, we can contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and health of our planet. Let’s work together to protect hippos and their natural habitats before it’s too late. Every effort counts in ensuring a thriving ecosystem for future generations. #February15 #WorldHippopotamusDay #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries

  • World Bonobo Day is celebrated every year on 14th February to honor our closest relatives who share over 98% of their DNA with humans and are known for intelligence, empathy, and matriarchal societies. These animals also teach us the power of cooperation and peace. Sadly, Bonobos, the Central African natives, are endangered great apes due to human activities like deforestation, hunting, poaching, etc. Since every action counts, therefore we should atleast play our role as an individual or community in sustaining these primates by supporting various conservation initiatives towards them. Let's spread awareness and make valuable efforts to ensure a safe and secured future for Bonobos to exist. #LastGreatApeDiscovered #WorldBonoboDay #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries

  • 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐚𝐲, celebrated on January 26, signifies the enforcement of India’s Constitution in 1950 and the remarkable transformation of the nation into a republic. This grand day features a spectacular parade in New Delhi along the Kartavya Path, showcasing India’s military strength and rich cultural diversity. Beginning at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the parade moves past India Gate and culminates near the Red Fort, filled with vibrant tableaus from states and Union Territories that celebrate India’s unity, heritage, and progress. The theme for the 𝟕𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐃𝐚𝐲 in 2025, “स्वर्णिम भारत - विरासत और विकास” (𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 - 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭), inspires a recognition of the country’s cultural wealth and ongoing developmental strides. This year’s celebrations also highlight environmental awareness, with tableaus and performances that focus on sustainability, renewable energy, and united efforts for a greener future. This pivotal event serves as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the environment while honouring the nation’s journey. #RepublicDay2025 #SharedSustainableObjectives #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries

  • "𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐚𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠." This National Bird Day, let us take a firm stand against the exploitation of our feathered companions. Birds are meant to be wild—their natural instincts to fly, flock, thrive and should never be confined to cages. The pet trade and cruel breeding practices rob them of their freedom, resulting in significant suffering that manifests as physical deprivation and distressing behaviours. By rejecting the bird trade and advocating for avian welfare, we can help break this cycle of cruelty. Let us celebrate the stunning beauty of birds and choose conservation over captivity and support initiatives that protect their existence in the wild. Efforts like ecotourism not only preserve these magnificent species but also empower local communities. Let’s shift our focus from caged birds to advocating for their protection. After all, birds are not merely pets—they are essential to our ecosystems and serve as a reminder of nature’s unmatched splendour. This National Bird Day, let’s honour them for what they truly are: 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞. #January5 #NationalBirdDay2025 #CancelCaging #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries

  • Observed on December 10 every year, International Animal Rights day aims to commemorate animal victims of human actions and hold demonstrations to expose animal cruelty. The purpose of Animal Rights Day is to demand certain fundamental rights for animals, as the ones that exist for human beings. Behind the initiation of Animal Rights Day, by an NGO called 'Uncaged' was a desire to urge everyone to build a more compassionate society by rethinking their attitudes towards animals. The day December 10 was chosen intentionally to coincide with Human Rights Day, to emphasize the connection between human and animal rights. Given that many animals continue to suffer around us, despite legal recognition of Animal rights at many places, Animal Rights Day remains relevant as a constant reminder of our duty towards animals. #December10 #AnimalRightsDay #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries

  • World Soil Day is observed annually on December 5 to recognize it's vital role in sustaining ecosystem and supporting agriculture. Soil is one of the fundamental resource on earth which is recklessly degraded due to various anthropogenic activities. It's high time to step up for the conservation of this resource. The theme for this year is "Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor and Manage" which highlights the importance of accurate soil data in understanding soil characteristics and supporting informed decision making on sustainable soil management and food security. Let's take actions today to protect and nurture our soils for a better and healthier sustainable future. #SoilConservation #SustainableAgriculture #Harithkram #BeyondTheBoundaries
