Is Honey Vegan? We come across this question so often! Vegans face several dilemmas when it comes to honey consumption. They typically avoid animal products to minimize harm and exploitation. Some argue that bees work hard to produce honey primarily for their own sustenance, and taking it away is unjust. During the honey extraction process, bees can be harmed or even killed—this is especially true for how beekeeping is done in India. Many vegans choose to avoid honey simply because there are numerous plant-based alternatives available, such as agave nectar, maple syrup, and date syrup. (We do not see honey primarily as a sweetener; it is a superfood!- More on this for another day.) Let's explore these arguments! Honeybees are industrious creatures, workaholics, and natural hoarders, producing more honey than they need. The super chamber of the beehives stores this surplus, which our trained beekeepers harvest without harming the hive's essential resources. This chamber contains no larvae or eggs, ensuring that the honey is cruelty-free and that there is no bee mortality. So, does harvesting harm the bees? Surprisingly, no—if done scientifically and ethically 🐝 Harvesting honey exclusively from the super chamber respects the bees' natural order. This honey is capped (by bees with their own beeswax), ripe, and of higher quality with lower moisture content. By working exclusively with the super chamber, we ensure that the bees' essential work in the brood chamber—nurturing new generations—remains undisturbed. Unfortunately, most beekeepers in India, due to a lack of training or incentives, lack of access to the right kind of beehives (with all components), or sheer market pressures, take shortcuts by harvesting from the brood chamber. This uncapped, unripened, high-moisture liquid (somewhere between nectar and honey), invariably contains immature larvae and eggs, which is not only unethical but also cruel. Such honey needs pasteurization to make it shelf-stable, destroying its natural properties and contributing to a cycle of unscientific beekeeping. Here is a contrast between how honey is harvested from the multilayered super chambers in the West and how our beekeepers today extract unripened honey every week or fortnight from the brood chamber, thereby reducing the food for the colony and killing the larvae and eggs during extraction. hashtag #BeekeepingJourney #EthicalHoney #Vegan

Our mission is to revolutionize and transform the beekeeping landscape of India by enabling marginal and landless farmers and forest and forest-fringe dwellers, particularly women, with 360-degree value-chain integration for scientific apiculture. We build clusters of scientifically-trained beekeepers through a tech-enabled and human-assisted engagement model, supply high-quality beehives and inputs for maximum output, and offer a fair-forward buyback of hive harvests under the HUMBLE BEE brand. Our vision is to transform the beekeeping landscape of India and replicate the success which AMUL created for the dairy sector. We aim to build 1 million sustainable livelihoods by 2028. Scientific Beekeeping impacts climate-resilient agriculture through pollination, crop-yield enhancement, soil carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and agricultural GDP. Our AI-powered solution-stack enhances decision-support and adaptive strategies, providing beekeepers with the knowledge and tools to improve honey yields, pollination efficiency, and sustainable practices, eventually building climate-resilient ecosystems and strengthens rural economies. We are dedicated to practicing ethical beekeeping, ensuring that our honey is sourced solely from the super chamber of the hive, prioritizing the well-being of our bees and upholding the highest standards of care. At the heart of our mission also lies a deep appreciation for the remarkable flavors that nature offers. From across the diverse landscapes, flora and seasons, we meticulously curate and preserve the authenticity of each unique floral essence in each jar of pure, raw honey.

Our Mudhive Project in Kali Tiger Reserve 🐝🌿 Excited to share the journey with you as we team up with the Karnataka Forest Department and the Aga Khan Foundation to build 525 mudhives supporting livelihoods of 175 women in the evergreen untamed jungles of Kali Tiger Reserve. It's not just about bees; it's about people, nature, and resilience. Picture this – mudhives offering a cozy haven for our Indian honey bees. It's like providing them a five-star hotel amidst the wilderness, ensuring they thrive on the rich forest blooms. We're keeping it close to home – sourcing mud, straw, dung, and other materials from the very land the hamlets call home. Nature knows best, and by mimicking the natural world, these mudhives become fortresses against climate change, ensuring our bee colonies stand strong. With our stainless steel moulds precision-aligned with BIS dimensions, the hamlets have been resourceful and innovative, ingeniously designing their own mudhives. There's so much to learn every day as we navigate this journey together. Mudhives, with their natural construction materials and design, contribute to colony resilience by providing a suitable microclimate and environment for bees. Studies have shown that colonies in such structures exhibit resilience to environmental stressors like temperature fluctuations and pests, thereby ensuring the long-term health of bee populations. This reduces disease incidence among bees, helps manage colony size, and reduces swarming tendencies. Bees are indispensable pollinators, essential for the reproduction of many plant species within the ecosystem, thus contributing to the preservation of biodiversity. Ours is a step in the direction of proliferating bee population! 🌟🐝 #Mudhives #CommunityEmpowerment #ClimateResilience #KaliTigerReserve #Biodiversity #Sustainability
