Great advice in casual conversation.
By the way, it not only fits in the context mentioned in conversation, it is applied in every place in your professional / work environment. You must earn your respect before giving any suggestion to the creator who is building the business from scratch
During my time at my previous company, I faced a moment that truly tested my integrity. I was working on a high-stakes project with a tight deadline. The pressure was immense, and I found myself surrounded by supervisors and managers who often prioritized shortcuts and quick wins over principles and quality.
At one point, I was even encouraged to take an easier route—one that would have saved time but compromised the value of the work. It wasn’t blatantly unethical, but it wasn’t right either. And I knew that if I followed along, I’d be going against everything I stood for. The temptation to fit in, to avoid friction with these leaders was strong. But deep down, I couldn’t bring myself to take that path.
Instead, I chose to stick to my principles. Even though it meant pushing through longer hours and working under additional scrutiny from those who didn’t share the same commitment to doing things the right way, I pressed on. When I finally delivered the work, I felt a deep sense of pride—not just in the outcome but in knowing I hadn’t let the environment dictate my values.
That experience reinforced a powerful truth: integrity isn’t defined by the people around you; it’s defined by the choices you make, especially when surrounded by those who abandon theirs.
As Adam Grant says:
"The heart of integrity is upholding your principles even if others abandon theirs."
To anyone navigating challenging environments with questionable leadership, remember this: your values are your strength. Doing the right thing might feel lonely at times, but it’s what builds lasting pride and credibility—not just with others, but with yourself.

"Other people are doing it" is not a justification for being dishonest or disrespectful.
Character is more than who you are at your best. It's who you become when your peers are at their worst.
The heart of integrity is upholding your principles even if others abandon theirs.
