At Ikigai Law, we have been hosting a series of roundtables on AI to spark meaningful conversations about its future in India. Recently, we convened industry leaders, civil society experts, and academics for a discussion on AI governance and shared responsibility framework. A key takeaway was that a framework that appropriately allocates responsibility across the AI lifecycle can strengthen India’s AI ecosystem while ensuring ethical and responsible deployment. Moderated by Rohit Kumar and featuring an insightful keynote by Markham Erickson, the discussion yielded valuable insights on: - The complexity of the AI lifecycle and supply chain underscores the need for consensus on baseline understanding of key actors and their roles. - The need to analyse gaps in India’s current legal, sectoral, policy, and institutional framework. - The impact of existing sectoral regulations and principles (such as healthcare) on an operable shared responsibility framework; and the utility of regulatory sandboxes to identify and assess issues. - Allocating appropriate responsibilities is crucial for ensuring accountability and building trust in AI. We also explored critical questions around designing a shared responsibility framework, balancing challenges in responsibility allocation, and the role of industry self-regulation and best practices. The insights from this discussion will shape a report we are excited to share soon. A heartfelt thank you to all our incredible speakers for enriching the conversation: Rakesh Maheshwari, Ashish Aggarwal, @Dr. Sivaramakrishanan R Guruvayur, Dipakshi Mehandru Bharat Aggarwal, Rohit Chauhan, Suneet Kapoor, Manavi Jain, Bikas Kr.
