India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) welcomes Mr. Salil Kappoor (Salil Kapoor) as Chief Evangelist and Senior Fellow - Consumer Electronics, Appliances & Air Conditioners Our nation has not performed to its potential in this key vertical which turns out to be over 350 billion USD globally. Our exports are minuscule. Exports indicate the competitiveness and profoundness of any industry-if you do not export it means that we have a serious issue. With non-tariff barriers, we have been able to build better than earlier industries in both ACs and Colour TV. In ACs we are rapidly deepening the value addition but not so much in colour TVs. Consumer Appliances manufacturing is in a nascent stage and we depend on imports. We cannot allow this to continue. Our current manufacturing output in Consumer Electronics is a mere 13 billion USD and AC’s only 3.5 billion USD. Both these put together have an output of over 350 billion USD globally. We are now targeting Consumer electronics manufacturing to cross USD 40 billion in production by 2030. We are crafting a vision for AC manufacturing with a major emphasis on exports. Domestic growth will be fuelled by urbanization, rising disposable incomes, technological advancements, and robust manufacturing capabilities. Mr. Salil Kapoor, with over two decades of leadership experience at global giants like LG Electronics, Samsung, Dish TV, and Voltas, brings unmatched expertise to ICEA. His proven ability to drive transformative initiatives and his cross-functional expertise will be instrumental in advancing the initiatives within the consumer electronics sector at ICEA. Salil’s active engagement in key industry forums and mentorship of startups further highlights his commitment to fostering innovation and growth. His insights and strategic vision will be a significant asset to ICEA’s mission of developing the consumer electronics sector in India. Together, with industry leaders such as Mr. Salil Kappoor (Salil Kapoor), we aim to catalyze the growth and innovation in this vital segment, ensuring that India emerges as a leader in the consumer electronics segment in addition to the other segments in the electronics ecosystem. ICEA recently hosted a thought-provoking webinar along with SERI, bringing together industry leaders, government officials, and experts to discuss key steps toward a sustainable and circular future for electronics manufacturing. Ms. Sunita Verma, Senior Director from the Ministry of Electronics and IT, emphasized designing products with circular economy principles from the start. She stressed formalizing the informal sector—responsible for 85% of recycling—to improve processes and reduce health risks associated with outdated technologies. The demand for critical materials like lithium, graphite, cobalt, and nickel is expected to rise sharply by 2040. The webinar highlighted the importance of secondary extraction, extending product lifetimes, and refurbishing to mitigate electronic waste and reduce environmental impact. Dr. Sandip Chatterjee spotlighted ITAD’s growing role in the environmentally responsible reuse, recycling, and repair of IT equipment. ITAD practices help bulk consumers like government offices and IT service providers ensure data security while contributing to the circular economy. These insights underline the urgent need to align environmental responsibility with India’s rapid digital growth. Let’s work together to adopt sustainable practices and build a greener future. Cybersecurity as a Public Good in the Age of AI As India continues on its path of increasing digitisation and democratising technology through the proliferation of devices like mobile phones and access to Artificial Intelligence models, even at the grassroots level, cybersecurity has become a necessity for citizens and enterprises. To build on this and understand the perspective of key stakeholders from government, industry, and civil society, ICEA recently organised a Roundtable Discussion on “Cybersecurity and AI in India’s Digital Future.” With India being a “Target-rich” nation, low adoption of AI and Cybersecurity by Indian enterprises and lack of harmonization of security standards need to be adequately addressed to protect critical information and infrastructure. We were pleased to have Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar (Additional Secretary, MeitY), Dr. Sanjay Bahl (Director General, CERT-In), and Shri Sanjeev Banzal (Director General, ERNET) join us in this critical discussion along with Indian and global tech leaders, think tanks, academia, and non-profit organisations. The roundtable explored frameworks for: -Building indigenous cybersecurity and AI capabilities -Developing skills -Strengthening public-private partnerships This dialogue marks an important step in ICEA's ongoing efforts to support India's vision of becoming a global technology leader in both hardware and software. #ICEA #MakeTheFuture #Cybersecurity #ArtificialIntelligence #DigitalIndia #TechPolicy #Innovation #GlobalTechnology #AI #ArtificialIntelligence
