About us
India Development Foundation (IDF) is a private, non-profit, research foundation set up as a Trust in 2003. Guided by the principles of equality and non-discrimination, IDF works on a variety of issues with a view to inform policymakers. One of its focus areas is to develop awareness about how markets work, why they are desirable and how to develop them. IDF aims to help policymakers transform emerging economies into market-based societies. A three-pronged approach: 1) To offer recommendations derived from research and analysis. 2) To generate a blue-print of how to implement the recommendations, worked out through interaction with practitioners and stakeholders. 3) To disseminate our work through publications in peer-reviewed journals, workshops, seminars and various media to reach out to practitioners, policymakers and the general public. IDF also undertakes pilot projects to demonstrate how our recommendations can be realised.

The India Development Foundation (IDF) has released a report proposing a data-driven framework to distinguish between games of skill and games of chance, addressing regulatory challenges in India’s booming online gaming industry. Releasing the report at the IAMAI’s Indian Gaming Convention powered by Meta, Professor Shubhashis Gangopadhyay, Research Director at IDF, underscored the importance of this framework. "In India, we enjoy gaming, but we don’t like betting," he remarked, highlighting the regulatory challenges posed by inconsistent laws across states. As technology outpaces regulation, the need for a robust, game-agnostic system to differentiate between games of skill and chance is urgent. India Development Foundation (IDF) owes a huge debt of gratitude to Mr. Ratan Tata. As a Founding Trustee, he was the driving force behind setting up IDF in 2003. He championed the cause of IDF and got on board other eminent personalities such as Mr. Narayan Murthy, Mr. JN Godrej, Mr. Rahul Bajaj and Professor Amartya Sen, all of whom became Founding Trustees. Mr. Ratan had the foresight that the opening up of the Indian economy will throw up many complex issues that will require deep analysis and thought. He also knew the current institutions at that time would not be able to do justification to this important task, and therefore an independent, dedicated and specialized organization was required. Thus IDF was born, as an independent non-profit Trust, in the service of the Nation. Thank you, Mr. Ratan Tata for your vision and foresight, and for giving the much needed support in the initial years.
