About us
Indus Action was founded with the vision of solving India's deep-rooted problems via public policy. The organization seeks to identify the wide gaps that exist in policy framing and their grassroots implementation. It also aims to mobilize public resources and empower communities to bridge that gap. Indus Action's first campaign was launched in 2013 to support the effective implementation of Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act, 2009. Under this section it is mandatory for unaided, non-minority private schools to reserve at least 25% of seats in Nursery, KG and Class 1 for children belonging to disadvantaged and economically weaker sections.

📢 Empowering Families Through Care: Notes from the field We at Indus Action are proud to share stories from our frontline cadre delivering Cash Plus Care services. As care providers, we've learned that true impact goes beyond individual efforts - it's about creating lasting change in families' lives. Through our comprehensive cash+care training module, we've developed crucial skills to identify opportunities for meaningful assistance and help families access life-changing government schemes. But we recognise there's still significant work ahead in building awareness. What makes our approach unique? The practical, hands-on training alongside Anganwadi Workers enables us to support families at their own pace. We've witnessed firsthand how connecting families with the proper schemes and care services can transform their lives. One of our most rewarding moments is using simple tools like screenshots to show families their scheme eligibility, especially when they're facing financial stress but unaware of their entitlements. Mansi and the rest of the team are building a stronger support system for families across India! 💪 #CashPlusCare #SocialImpact #IndusAction #CommunityDevelopment #FamilyWelfare

Some time back, Divya Jadhav and Jisha Garg from our team joined hands with Sarita Devi, our passionate Community Champion, for an insightful Focus Group Discussion in Haryana's Shahabad block. Sitting with members of a local Self-Help Group, we witnessed the robust exchange of stories, challenges, and dreams that will shape the Lakhpati Didi initiative in Haryana. We're deeply inspired by how these women are actively participating in building their path to financial independence. Every conversation strengthens our understanding and helps us create solutions that reflect community needs. Through dedicated champions like Sarita Devi and the determined SHG members, we at Indus Action continue to work towards our vision of empowered communities. We at Indus Action have partnered with the Directorate of Elementary Education, Government of Tripura, through an MoU to implement RTE Section 12(1)(c). The agreement was formally signed on 6 January 2025 by distinguished officials, including the Director and Joint Director of School Education and the OSD. Our East Zone team also had the valuable opportunity to meet with Tripura's Secretary of Education to chart the implementation roadmap for this crucial provision. We are deeply grateful for the visionary leadership and support of Shri Raval hamendra Kumar, IAS, Special Secretary, and Shri N.C. We're deeply grateful to Meghna Dhulia for featuring Indus Action's journey in The Times Of India! As we work to transform welfare entitlements into meaningful action on the ground, this recognition shines a light on the impact we've achieved together - supporting over 1.1 million individuals, helping families access essential welfare benefits, and ensuring children can claim their right to education. This feature celebrates not just our work, but the stories of countless families whose lives have been transformed through improved access to welfare schemes. Our latest RTE Bright Spot Report has consistently emphasised how RTE Section 12(1)(c) is a crucial bridge for disadvantaged children to access education in private schools. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Richa Goswami for bringing this critical issue to the forefront. Her analysis aligns with our ongoing advocacy for preserving and strengthening RTE's inclusive vision. Together, we must ensure that education remains a fundamental right, not a privilege. Happy to share the following commentary piece published in EPW about amendment in Section 12(1)(c) of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act in Maharashtra, whereby all the private schools that have a government school in the radius of 1 kilometre are not obligated anymore to give admission under the 25% reservation for the economically weaker section or the disadvantaged group students. How do we understand this change and how they are gradually chipping away the spirit of the Right to Education act. Your thoughts and insights are welcome!

We are grateful to see Luis Miranda and Varun Aggarwal tackle prevalent myths about nonprofits in their recent Economic Times op-ed! We're honoured to be featured among organisations driving social transformation in India. Working where markets fail, and governments struggle, nonprofits are essential catalysts for change. With growing opportunities for government partnerships, there's never been a better time for scalable social impact in India. Thank you both for highlighting this crucial perspective! At Indus Action, Mohammad Urooj Siddique recently had the privilege of listening to construction workers' stories in Delhi. What unfolded was far more profound than we anticipated. These conversations help us understand their daily challenges, the grit that keeps them going, and the dreams that fuel their tireless work. They serve as a reminder of how often we overlook these incredible individuals who quite literally build the world around us. These meaningful connections remind us why we do what we do at Indus Action. Every shared story strengthens our commitment to creating lasting processes and systems to ensure they receive their rightful welfare entitlements. #BoCW #ConstructionWorkers #IndusAction
In a recent engagement, I had the chance to sit with construction workers and listen to their stories—stories of resilience, quiet determination, and hope. What started as an opportunity to connect quickly turned into something much deeper. Hearing about their lives opened a new sense of understanding in me—of the challenges they face every day, the grit it takes to keep going, and the dreams that fuel their hard work. It was a humbling reminder of how often we overlook the people who build the world around us, both literally and figuratively. I’m deeply grateful to Indus Action for making this experience possible, for helping create opportunities for such meaningful connections. #BoCW #ConstructionWorkers #IndusAction

Our East Zone team recently embarked on a transformative journey to Netarhat, the "Queen of Chotanagpur," nestled in Jharkhand's Latehar district. The team spent valuable time amidst the serene heights of the Chhotanagpur plateau, where strategy met serenity. Between planning sessions and team discussions, we found inspiration in this historic hill station's misty mornings and peaceful surroundings. We're returning to work and starting 2025 with renewed energy, stronger bonds, and a clear vision for expanding our impact across India. Special thanks to our team members who made this offsite both productive and memorable. We're excited to continue our mission of transforming lives through welfare entitlement access with the spirit of Netarhat's peaks in our hearts! #IndusAction #TeamEastZone #SocialImpact #Education #Jharkhand #TeamOffsite

As part of the I-BIC coalition, we recently dove deep into India's journey with cash-based social policies, particularly focusing on their impact on farmers and women. The insightful discussions were anchored by Renana Jhabvala and Sarath Davala, who traced the evolution from SEWA's groundbreaking pilot in Madhya Pradesh to today's ambitious 2.5 lakh crore allocation. We were fortunate to explore diverse development models through Jasmine Shah's newly released book on the Delhi Model, which adds fresh perspective to the ongoing discourse on various state-level approaches - from Kerala to Gujarat to the Dravidian model. These pathways offer different blueprints for states aspiring to reach middle-income status while maintaining the delicate balance between growth and equity. The implementation wisdom shared by Dr Rajeev Gowda and Dr Palanivel Thiaga Rajan brought valuable insights from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. We particularly resonated with their emphasis on delivering comprehensive public services - from robust food security to quality education, healthcare, and social insurance. Our day concluded with rich evaluation insights from Prof Santosh Mehrotra, who shared his experience as MGNREGA's designer, alongside learning from Project DEEP (Maharashtra & Rajasthan) and Pratichi's evaluation of Lakshmi Bhandar in West Bengal. #SocialPolicy #PublicPolicy #Development #IndianStates #Governance #SocialWelfare
