Enabling vulnerable familes, sustainable access to legislated rights.

About us

Indus Action was founded with the vision of solving India's deep-rooted problems via public policy. The organization seeks to identify the wide gaps that exist in policy framing and their grassroots implementation. It also aims to mobilize public resources and empower communities to bridge that gap. Indus Action's first campaign was launched in 2013 to support the effective implementation of Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act, 2009. Under this section it is mandatory for unaided, non-minority private schools to reserve at least 25% of seats in Nursery, KG and Class 1 for children belonging to disadvantaged and economically weaker sections.

  • 📢 We're excited to share highlights from the Indian Institute for Human Settlements's Urban Policy Dialogue 2024 (UPD 2024), where our Co-Founder and CEO, Cherukuri, Tarun, joined an esteemed panel on Crafting Urban Social Protection. 💡✨ The discussions, moderated by Gautam Bhan (IIHS), delved into reimagining social protection systems for India's rapidly urbanising landscape. Here are the key takeaways: 🌆 Urban Social Protection for India  India's current social protection framework, largely rural-centric, must evolve to address unique urban challenges. A "Right to City" approach can holistically integrate needs like land rights, housing, education, health, food, and infrastructure. 💰 Universal Benefits with Flexibility  Urban social protection should balance direct provisioning with robust social insurance, akin to global models like Brazil and China. Flexible, untied financing mechanisms could empower state governments and urban local bodies to tailor solutions for diverse urban vulnerabilities. 🏢 Strengthening Urban Governance  Decentralisation is key. Expanding local capacities and introducing municipal or social work cadres can enhance urban delivery systems without overburdening frontline workers. Simplified methods for identifying vulnerable populations are also essential. ⚖️ Integrated Safety Nets, Not Single Schemes  It's time for a bold political shift towards integrated, urban-specific safety nets. Technology can aid delivery within a firm, rights-based entitlement framework. Let's rethink and shape a more inclusive, urban social protection system that leaves no one behind! 🌍 #UPD2024 #SocialProtection #UrbanTransformation #IndusAction

How do we shift our mindset about success from narrow parameters of academic excellence and material wealth to the broader, inclusive concept of thriving? We believe that the mindset that each of us hold makes the system and systems shift when individuals, who make up that system, shift. Catch us live tomorrow on Instagram at 9 am as we speak to Madhuri Dhariwal of Indus Action about her journey of finding the self within the system. #Live #YoungPeople #Inclusion #Education #ChangeTheScript #SystemsChange

  • 🚧 We at Indus Action have been working relentlessly to transform the implementation of the Building and Other Construction Workers (BoCW) Act 🚀 We've gained deep insights into the Act's implementation and ecosystem through redesigned processes, impactful awareness campaigns, capacity-building for last-mile operators, and robust grievance redressal frameworks in Delhi and Chhattisgarh. But here's the game-changer: what's truly needed isn't just incremental progress but a systemic overhaul. Our mission? To streamline processes and engage every stakeholder effectively—ensuring that construction workers and their families receive their rightful welfare entitlements swiftly and hassle-free. This journey has culminated in a whitepaper that addresses the urgent need for change. It's more than a document; it's a call to action for a brighter future for India's construction workforce. 📖 Read the whitepaper and join the conversation: https://lnkd.in/gvd_ezN2 #IndusAction #ConstructionWorkers #PolicyReform #SocialChange #BoCWAct

  • 🌟 Indus Action Celebrates Community Leadership at Nagpur Residential Workshop! 🌟 We recently concluded our Annual Samaaj Residential in Nagpur, a transformative nine-day journey that brought together our incredible Community Leaders and Community Champions. The event unfolded in two dynamic phases, each designed to nurture and empower our community's changemakers. A special highlight was a memorable bus tour inspired by Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies' partnership approach. It gave many participants their first non-religious outing—a moment of pure joy and exploration. For our Community Leaders, the focus was multifaceted: - Exploring entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial pathways - Diving deep into personal and professional aspirations - Prioritising mental and physical well-being - Understanding technological integration Our Community Champions deeply connect with the organisation's core mission and understand our long-term vision and approach. Nishta and Anju from Tehraav delivered powerful sessions that resonated with our leaders. Yuvraj, a dedicated volunteer from Down to Earth, supported us throughout the journey. The workshop concluded with a poignant visit to Deeksha Bhumi—a powerful reminder of our commitment to social transformation. #IndusAction #CommunityLeadership #SocialChange #Empowerment
