Enabling vulnerable familes, sustainable access to legislated rights.

About us

Indus Action was founded with the vision of solving India's deep-rooted problems via public policy. The organization seeks to identify the wide gaps that exist in policy framing and their grassroots implementation. It also aims to mobilize public resources and empower communities to bridge that gap. Indus Action's first campaign was launched in 2013 to support the effective implementation of Section 12(1)(c) of the Right to Education Act, 2009. Under this section it is mandatory for unaided, non-minority private schools to reserve at least 25% of seats in Nursery, KG and Class 1 for children belonging to disadvantaged and economically weaker sections.

🤝 We're delighted to announce our partnership with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to transform the delivery of social security entitlements to millions of construction and unorganised sector workers! This three-year collaboration will revolutionise the state's worker welfare system through digital solutions and streamlined processes. It will focus on entitlements delivered through the Building and Other Construction Workers (BoCW) Board and the Unorganized Workers (UoW) Social Security Board. The initiative will set a new benchmark for citizen-centric welfare. Uttar Pradesh is poised to become a national model for worker welfare, demonstrating how technology-driven governance can ensure efficient, transparent, and accessible social security for every worker in the state. Our initiative will introduce: 1. A redesigned digital platform for worker registration and entitlements 2. Integration with UP's Unified Family ID System for household-level focus 3. Technology-led protocols to expedite benefit processing 4. Real-time monitoring systems to track implementation We are deeply grateful to Shri Anil Rajbhar, Cabinet Minister for Labour and Employment UP, Dr M.K. Shanmuga Sundaram IAS (Principal Secretary), Shri Kunal Silku IAS (Special Secretary), Smt. Ghazal Bharadwaj (Secretary BoCW Board) and Shri Shamim Akhtar (Deputy Labour Commissioner) for their visionary leadership and support in making this partnership possible. Our Founder and CEO, Tarun Cherukuri, says, "Our collaboration with the UP Labour Department represents a crucial step toward building an inclusive social security system. We will combine technological innovation with citizen-centred design to ensure no worker is left behind." Together, we're working to create a model for efficient welfare delivery to benefit crores of workers across Uttar Pradesh. We had a blast this last Saturday as our North zone team members gathered at the beautiful Lodhi Garden in Delhi for an action-packed sports day! The team traded policy papers for cricket bats and ultimate frisbees, bringing the same passion we have for our work to the playing field. Special thanks to Y-Ultimate and Benoy Stephen, particularly Rohit Kohli, Deepak & Mansi for their patience and expertise in teaching us the basics (and then some!) of ultimate frisbee. From wobbly first throws to surprisingly competitive matches by the end of the day, we discovered new talents among our team. Nothing beats team bonding under the Delhi sun while getting some exercise! #TeamIndusAction #WorkHardPlayHard #UltimateFrisbee #TeamBuilding

  • Every day, millions of construction workers build India's infrastructure with precarious rights and security. https://lnkd.in/gYgVybQ5 This video explores how the Building and Other Construction Workers (BoCW) Act could change everything for the millions of workers who form the backbone of our nation's development. Despite promising safety nets, insurance, education benefits, and pensions, most workers remain unaware of their entitlements under this transformative legislation. At Indus Action, we're working to bridge this critical gap between policy and implementation. Watch as we take you to labour chowks and beyond, where you can hear directly from the workers about their struggles and learn how systematic intervention can empower this vulnerable workforce. Please share this video to spread awareness and be part of the change. Sushruti Sachdev & Vivek N. are leadership team members featured in the video. #ConstructionWorkers #BoCW #LabourRights #IndusAction #WorkerWelfare #SocialSecurity #IndianLabour

  • Harshil Sharma from our team recently participated in the Stakeholder Discussion on the Evaluation of the Labour & Employment Statistical System (LESS) at the Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management (AJNIFM). This vital forum brought together experts and state labour officials to shape the future of India's labour data ecosystem. Our team engaged with distinguished thought leaders, including Prof. Amitabh Kundu, Dr. BK Pandey, Prof. Satyen Lama, Dr. Jaya Bhalla, and Ms. Arshee Khosla from the Labour Bureau, Chandigarh. A significant insight emerged: while the Labour Bureau has been the cornerstone of labour market data since the 1950s-80s and maintains strong credibility, it needs modernisation to address contemporary workforce challenges. At Indus Action, we believe data is power. Strengthening labour statistics will be instrumental in developing better social security frameworks, wage policies, and worker protections across India. We are looking forward to more engagement in this space. If you have insights on labour data innovations, informal workforce tracking, or survey methodologies, connect with us to collaborate on this critical work! #LabourData #WorkforceInnovation #IndusAction #PolicyAdvocacy #DataDrivenDecisions

Had the opportunity to attend the Stakeholder Discussion on the Evaluation of the Labour & Employment Statistical System (LESS) at the Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management (AJNIFM)—a platform that brought together experts and state labour officials to discuss the future of India’s labour data ecosystem. Engaging with thought leaders like Prof. amitabh kundu , Dr. BK Pandey, Prof. Satyen Lama, Dr. Jaya Bhalla, and Ms. Arshee Khosla (Labour Bureau, Chandigarh) was insightful. A key takeaway? The Labour Bureau, once the primary source of labour market data (1950s-80s), still holds immense credibility but needs modernization to meet today’s workforce challenges. I shared recommendations on enhancing labour data collection, integrating real-time tracking mechanisms, and designing surveys for gig and platform workers.Encouragingly, these suggestions were well-received, and I’ve been invited to contribute further on survey methodology and implementation strategies. What excites me most is the recognition of Indus Action's work with state governments—paving the way for collaboration as a knowledge and expert partner in future labour projects. Data is power, and strengthening labour statistics will be key to ensuring better social security, wage policies, and worker protections. Looking forward to deeper engagement on this front. If you have insights on labour data innovations, informal workforce tracking, or survey methodologies, let’s connect and collaborate!

  • Success, as defined by Madhuri Dhariwal, goes beyond individual achievements. We believe true success lies in empowering others to reach their full potential and creating a sustainable impact in communities. Through our work at Indus Action, we measure success by the number of lives we transform and the systemic changes we help bring about. We see success in every family that gains access to their rights, every child who steps into a classroom, and every community that becomes more equitable and inclusive. #IndusAction #SocialImpact #Changemakers #InclusiveIndia

  • Building on our last update, we're excited to share a significant milestone from our Delhi office today! Our team came together to assess our dedicated Community Leaders from Delhi, Chhattisgarh, and Varanasi - a truly enriching experience of connection and collaboration. We've designed a comprehensive evaluation framework that reflects our commitment to nurturing grassroots leadership. Our Community Leaders demonstrated their impact through four dynamic assessment areas as they: • Shared powerful case studies showcasing how they've enabled citizens to access vital welfare entitlements • Demonstrated their problem-solving prowess in stakeholder management • Showcased their campaign coordination and communication skills • Applied their analytical abilities to derive meaningful insights from campaign data The energy in the room was incredible as our Community Leaders connected with team members across zones, sharing experiences and learning from each other. These interactions went beyond the assessment - they strengthened the bonds within our Indus Action family. We're incredibly proud of how our Community Leaders are driving social change on the ground. Their commitment to bridging the gap between citizens and welfare entitlements continues to inspire us! #IndusAction #SocialImpact #CommunityLeadership #CitizenWelfare #SocialSector #Development #Governance

  • 🎯 Today, at our Delhi office, we're conducting comprehensive assessments of our Community Champions. Our evaluation process reflects our commitment to nurturing leaders who can effectively drive social change. Our fellows are being evaluated through four dynamic assessment tools, each designed to test critical competencies: 1️⃣ In "Enabling Citizen Access," fellows showcase their real-world impact by presenting case studies from their work at Indus Action, demonstrating how they've helped citizens access crucial government schemes. 2️⃣ Through "Building Bridges," we evaluate their problem-solving and stakeholder management skills as they navigate complex scenarios with stakeholders to resolve welfare registration challenges. 3️⃣ The "Campaign Coordination" assessment examines their professional communication and planning abilities as they craft crucial correspondence and organise on-ground campaign preparations. 4️⃣ In "Campaign Data Analysis," fellows demonstrate their analytical prowess by diving deep into campaign data, extracting meaningful insights, and proposing strategic improvements. These assessments will be followed by panel interviews, completing our holistic evaluation approach. We're excited to see our champions demonstrate their growth and commitment to our mission! 💫 #IndusAction #SocialImpact #Fellowship #Development #Governance #CitizenWelfare #SocialSector

  • We're grateful to have participated in the 2nd Edition of the RTE Paper Presentation & Discussion Series, where our National RTE Lead, Mansi Middha, led an engaging workshop organised by the Legal Aid and Awareness Committee (LAAC). Over our 11-year journey, we've helped secure private school admissions for more than 7 lakh children through the Right to Education Act. We shared key insights from our 2023 and 2024 RTE Retention Reports, highlighting our research on student enrollment patterns, retention challenges, and integration within schools under the RTE framework. The discussion helped expand the gap between policy and implementation, exploring achievements and areas needing attention. The interactive Q&A session that followed brought forth valuable discussions on policy enhancement, practical challenges, and strengthening RTE implementation. We're encouraged by the enthusiastic participation and meaningful dialogue from this session. #RightToEducation #EducationForAll #IndusAction #InclusiveEducation #PolicyImplementation
