Maha Shivaratri is celebrated annually on the 14th night of the lunar month of Phalguna (February–March). It holds great spiritual and religious significance for devotees. Here are the main reasons why Maha Shivaratri is celebrated: 1. Divine Marriage of Shiva and Parvati – It is believed that on this night, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati, symbolizing the union of divine energies. 2. The Night of Shiva’s Cosmic Dance (Tandava) – According to some beliefs, Maha Shivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed his Tandava, the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. 3. The Legend of Neelkanth (Drinking Poison) – During the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), Shiva consumed the deadly poison (halahala) to save the universe. To prevent its effect, he held it in his throat, which turned blue, earning him the name Neelkanth (the blue-throated one). Maha Shivaratri is observed in gratitude for this act of self-sacrifice. 4. Shiva Linga Manifestation – Another legend states that on this day, Lord Shiva manifested as a Jyotirlinga (an infinite column of light) to settle a dispute between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma about their supremacy. 5. Auspicious Night for Spiritual Growth – Maha Shivaratri is considered a powerful time for meditation, fasting, and seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings for wisdom, peace, and liberation (moksha). Devotees observe fasting, chant Om Namah Shivaya, and stay awake through the night in devotion. May the festival bring peace, prosperity and happiness to everyone..
