Report of IPEC India Session by Fred Rowley on ‘Why some naturopathic materials cannot be compressed as tablets?’ on November 21, 2024 IPEC India, conducted a visionary session focusing on ‘Why some naturopathic medicine cannot be compressed as tablets?’ and ways to tackle this. The session was conducted in association with ACG World and SciTech Centre. This session was delivered by Mr. Fred Rowley, a renowned expert in Sold Dosage forms and particularly on compression of all kind of tablets. The session took place at the SciTech Centre, Mumbai, bringing together an amalgamation of experts, leaders and students from different pharmaceutical companies and institutes. The session started with inspiring opening remarks by Mr. Ajit Singh, Chairman ACG and IPEC India. Fred Rowley touched upon the following topics during his deliberations. · Parts of naturopathic medicine (herbal medicines, Dietary Supplements etc.) · Most APIs in pharma are brittle/plastic/elastoplastic · How different materials react differently under compression. · Very frequently, excipients are not declared in Ayurvedic formulations. · Compressed Ayurved medicine has a lot of issues that must be tackled (e.g. Static electricity, flow, hygroscopicity, etc.) · Problems to tackle after compression- lamination, capping, cracking, splitting, etc. Some Solutions that were discussed to mitigate the issues: · Raw material should be standardised in a way that would ensure consistency. · Some Processes- Dry Granulation; Wet Granulation and Directly Compressing (DC) These eventually involve the application of an extra ingredient- Lubricant, which could pose a problem during the manufacture of Naturopathic/Ayurvedic medicine. · Slugging- a dry granulation technique used in tablet manufacturing to create large tablets, or slugs, that are then broken down into granules for recompression into final tablets. · The Stainless Steel shall be of premium quality to compress tablets (avoid rusting, and breakage of punches & dies). The session was concluded by Mr. Rowley by emphasising the saying, “Tablet Press is the most complicated, simple machine to misunderstand”. The Q&A session after the talk was most interesting and participative which brought clarity on number of issues. The session ended with Mr. kaushik desai delivered closing statements briefing about the activities of IPEC India and Health Foods & Dietary Supplements (HADSA). Mr. Desai encouraged the participants to become member of Association to get maximum benefit in enhancing their knowledge and avail the opportunity to be part of the global fraternity of technologists. IPEC India appreciated the help of Mr. Ketan Parmar in facilitating the visit of Mr. Rowley. As a token of appreciation and gratitude, Mr. Fred Rowley was felicitated with a memento by Dr. Parizad Elchidana. The session ended with networking high tea. #session #knowledge #knowledgeshare #interactive #pharma #pharmaceutucals #pharmaceutical #excipient
