#IndianScholarSpotlight: Rapid urbanisation, economic growth and population growth, amidst rising temperatures, will soon significantly increase India’s demand for cooling. Low-cost energy solutions that target ambient temperatures in public buildings could help limit energy consumption levels in the country. In this pilot study, Dr. Eswaran Somanathan, Dr. Rohini Somanathan, and Benston John evaluate the impact of ‘Cool Rooftops’ on various outcomes such as indoor temperatures, energy consumption, thermal comfort, and learning outcomes of school students. 🌍 #DataWithImpact | Why investing in data talent is essential for driving change in the social sector? In a world grappling with challenges like climate change, epidemics, and inequality, data-driven decision-making is reshaping how we tackle these issues. However, a significant gap persists between the demand for skilled data professionals in the social sector and the availability of talent with both technical expertise and a social impact focus. In this blog, Aditi Namdeo, Director - Strategic Initiatives at J-PAL South Asia, highlights how initiatives such as the India Climate and Health Data Capacity Accelerator (IDCA) are striving to bridge this gap. A collaboration between DataDotOrg, J-PAL SA, and Wellcome Trust, IDCA is equipping professionals with the tools to harness data for impactful solutions. It is not just about crunching numbers but about creating real-world impact through equitable access to data science opportunities and fostering collaborations that drive change. 📖 Read here: https://j-p.al/8za Khushi Baby | Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) | Janaagraha | CivicDataLab

#IndianScholarSpotlight: Arsenic consumption through water can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes and even death, with children being more susceptible to arsenic poisoning due to their lower immunities. In Jorhat, Assam, one of India’s most arsenic-contaminated regions, over 60% of rural families rely on contaminated borewells and tubewells for drinking water – despite the availability of piped clean water through a government scheme. In a pilot study for Round 1 of the Indian Scholars Program, Dr. Prarthna Agarwal Goel, Dr. Rashmi Barua, and Sujatha Srinivasan examined the if providing information on the devastating health consequences of arsenic contamination, alongside transaction cost support, can increase the use of safe drinking water through the government water supply. In Round 2 of the ISP, Dr. Goel and Dr. Barua, with Deboshmita B., conduct a full-scale cluster randomised evaluation of the program to evaluate the impact of the information program. 💡 By 2050, India will have 347 million people over 60—an ageing wave we cannot ignore. Since 2016, J-PAL South Asia and Government of Tamil Nadu have been working together to understand these challenges through an ongoing eight-year survey of 6,000 elderly individuals. 📊 The research has revealed critical issues like poverty, loneliness, and mental health struggles. Using the survey findings, the Tamil Nadu government has launched and enhanced several key programs aimed at supporting the elderly, including increased old-age pensions, the introduction of a Senior Citizen Policy, and innovative mental health interventions specifically for elderly women living alone. 🤝 But beyond these tangible outcomes, the partnership between J-PAL South Asia and the Tamil Nadu government offers important lessons for effective research-government collaboration. In our latest blog, Murali Mallikarjunan and Nikhil Kanakamedala dive into these insights, discussing how trust, collaboration, and continuous sharing of real-time data can lead to meaningful, sustainable policy change. 🔗 Read the blog here: https://lnkd.in/gnwWGeqS Sharanya Chandran | Urvashi Wattal | Sana Satpathy | Rajesh Tamadapally | Anjana Kizhpadathil | Saptarishi Dutta

🌍 How do we tackle the interconnected climate challenges threatening food and water security? At #COP29 in Baku, the urgency of addressing these issues was front and center. J-PAL Middle East and North Africa (MENA), in collaboration with Community Jameel, hosted a panel titled “Scaling Resilience: Impact-Driven Partnerships for Food & Water Through Evidence & Innovation” under the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action. Our latest blog sheds light on the discussions, highlighting: 🌾 How evidence-backed innovations like flood-tolerant rice in Odisha and sustainable farming in Niger are helping communities adapt to climate challenges. 🤝 How initiatives like SARWA in South Asia and UJALA in Africa are bridging research and implementation to deliver scalable, impactful solutions. The panel emphasized the power of collaboration between governments, researchers, and communities to address the most pressing challenges posed by climate change 👉 Read the full blog here: https://j-p.al/rxe Sanjana Gorti | Sharanya Chandran | Urvashi Wattal | Shyam Sundar Sridhar | Yomna El-Awamri

#IndianScholarSpotlight: Kerala faces a unique challenge - despite a relatively large number of highly educated women, there is a high rate of unemployment among them. In this study, Dr. Praveena Kodoth, Dr. Tirtha Chatterjee, and Dr. Thiagu Ranganathan explore whether there is a “motherhood penalty” — evaluating the effects of childcare responsibility on educated women's labour market behaviour in Kerala. #DataForImpact | How can data address the world’s most urgent challenges at the intersection of climate change and public health? The India Climate and Health Data Capacity Accelerator (IDCA)—a collaboration between DataDotOrg, J-PAL South Asia, and the Wellcome Trust, launched in May 2023—aims to build a sustainable and scalable model to enhance the data capacity of India’s social sector, addressing critical challenges at the intersection of climate and health. The IDCA Fellowship brings together individuals with diverse backgrounds and expertise, placing them in social impact organizations to work on real-world challenges. Fellows develop interdisciplinary data skills and work on impactful projects, such as disaster preparedness, urban sustainability, water quality, and epidemiological studies focusing on disease patterns and public health responses. Meet Anuja Venkatachalam, an IDCA Fellow from the Pilot Cohort. At ARTPARK, Anuja’s work has included enhancing dengue prediction models by creating data pipelines and standardizing processes. These efforts aim to refine how data informs decision-making in public health initiatives. Read excerpts from our conversation with Anuja here 👇 Aditi Namdeo
