🛰 As reported by the BBC, Kayrros analysis revealed one of the worst methane leaks ever recorded took place last year at a remote well in Kazakhstan. This massive methane release was previously denied by the owner of the well and dismissed as ‘water vapour.’ Our analysis has now been verified by the Netherlands Institute for Space Research and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and confirmed by BBC Verify. Based on our findings, 127,000 tonnes of the gas escaped when a blowout started a fire that raged for over six months. The environmental impact of the leak is equivalent to the emissions of 717,000 petrol cars for a year. Our thanks to BBC News, International Methane Emissions Observatory, SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research and Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) for working with us on this important story. 🔋 A surge in stand-alone battery storage construction has quietly (or not so quietly) been disrupting the U.S. energy sector. Once considered a mere add-on to renewables, these projects are now reshaping the U.S. battery landscape and, in so doing, gas and power markets too. What’s driving this? In 2021, there were just nine stand-alone projects over 50 MW. By the end of 2025, there will likely be 55. Whereas earlier tax incentives only supported the construction of battery storage co-located with wind or solar farms, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and new tax incentives have made stand-alone batteries financially viable as energy sources independent from solar or wind. These stand-alone facilities have distinct advantages. By definition, they don’t need to be paired with renewables, and thus can be placed near high-demand areas for greatest impact. Just as importantly, thanks to their independence, they can be charged up when electricity is cheap and sell the power back at peak prices, creating lucrative opportunities – though they might use fossil sources to recharge. Kayrros uses satellite imagery and AI to closely track the progress of every battery project. These projects have a high impact on gas and power markets yet have long been tricky to monitor. Nearly 90% of planned stand-alone battery projects end up never seeing the light of day. With just 11% of planned projects getting built, traders need precise, real-time data to get the timing of associated market shifts right. Our insights enable smarter, data-driven decisions in a rapidly evolving energy landscape. 👉 Discover US Power Intelligence. 🛰️ Recently Kayrros attended EU Space Days 2024 at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, a gathering described by the European Commission as “the most important event of the Union when it comes to space policy and the EU Space Programme.” Strategic Project Manager Mathilde Allançon took part in a discussion on the EU’s ‘space flagships’ – Galileo, Copernicus, and soon-to-be-launched IRIS2 – and their role in advancing the EU’s green transition and continued digitisation – even as they bolster the bloc’s security. Mathilde and her co-panelists discussed the challenges and opportunities facing the EU space programme, and how the EU flagships can keep evolving to best meet emerging challenges. 📝 Key takeaways from the panel • Space is a powerful enabler of economic prosperity, the green transition, and digital transformation – and the EU is a world leader in supporting and shaping the global space industry. • Growing market demand is accelerating the need for Earth observation (EO) data and space-based services. • Current governance structures need more flexibility to meet rapidly evolving needs. It is critical to leverage EO data to the fullest in the enforcement of both existing and upcoming EU regulation. • Targeted funding for New Space companies and a stronger emphasis on private users will be essential to realising the full potential of space-based solutions. • In particular, EU investment strategies and funding tools should support growth-stage and late-stage companies, not just early-stage innovation. Joining Mathilde on stage were three world-class industry leaders: • Davide Vittori, CEO & Co-Founder, Astradyne • Franco Ongaro, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer, Leonardo • Chiara Manfletti, CEO, Neuraspace The discussion was moderated by Isabella Poldrugo, Deputy Head of Unit, Space Policy, European Commission. We were grateful for the opportunity to share our views and learn from others. 👉 Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/dMG7zm6p (Panel from 36:23 to 1:24:45) #euspace #innovation #climate #newspace #sustainability

🤖 We’re delighted to announce the release of KayrrosAI, a first-of-its-kind retrieval-augmented generation large language model (LLM) that lets members of the public pinpoint methane emissions down to the facility level. This new tool allows users to ask plain-language questions and get instant responses from our open-source Methane Watch map. As Axios reports, KayrrosAI deciphers and generates human language text while accessing our award-winning in-house data and insights on methane. While methane has a far shorter atmospheric lifetime than carbon dioxide, it’s important to remember it’s a more powerful warming agent. This makes cutting its emissions crucial to cutting near-term climate change. At a time of rising scepticism, this product is designed to help the public push back against misinformation on climate and greenhouse gas emissions. As Kayrros President Antoine Rostand told Axios, ‘Public pressure can force governments and large organisations to do what is needed to prevent climate breakdown. That starts with information.’ Thank you for the write-up Andrew Freedman. 👉 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eqb5KjvW 🤖 Try KayrrosAI here: https://lnkd.in/eGgykKyB #ai #llm #climate #methane #innovation

🛰️ Kayrros and the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) were pleased to unveil a groundbreaking new study detailing vast discrepancies in methane emissions estimates across five major Gulf oil and gas producers: Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, and the UAE. Our award-winning, flagship product, Methane Watch, informed by KAPSARC’s extensive regional knowledge, revealed that Saudi Arabia and the UAE stand out for effective methane management, showing the lowest methane emission intensities per barrel of oil equivalent. Our collaboration with KAPSARC also found: • Major gaps between different data sources, with satellite estimates in many cases showing far higher emissions than national reports. • Saudi Arabia’s methane emissions were 67% lower than the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates, while Iraq’s were 72% lower than the EDGAR estimate. Kayrros’ technology, married to KAPSARC’s regional expertise, is helping to set a standard for methane monitoring in the Gulf region. Thank you to the team at KAPSARC for collaborating with us for a second year. 👉 Watch the event here: https://lnkd.in/eFh_akrE #climate #methane #cop29 #energy #environmentalintelligence
