Taking the discussion further from our article in Dataquest (see: https://lnkd.in/gs7AccFM), it is important from a geopolitical perspective that US maintain a competitive edge as regards to AI evolution. This is relevant because AI is a technology that requires democratic sensitivities and open regulated frameworks for its responsible and ethical use. Though majority of this discussion has been around the software side, in this regard, it is equally significant to consider that AI chips have an equally important role in safe, secure and sovereign AI. In this aspect, it is important that incoming President Trump may re-evaluate his policy perspective around supporting only American companies under the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. In the last 5 years, the AI chip ecosystem is divided between the fabless and fabs. While Nvidia is a clear leader in fabless chip design, however they have large dependency on fab companies like TSMC. It will be difficult for US companies like Intel to provide a substitute to TSMC N2/N4 chips in the near future, because of the internal financial allocation difficulties that Intel and other US companies have and so are nott allocating enough funds for R&D activities where TSMC has a clear edge. In this context it is important to understand that TSMC has been assured $6 bn in subsidies and the $ 5 bn in loans to establish three fabs in USA. Intel and Samsung being other two beneficiaries have not made any significant headway and have delayed their plans. Having a fab in US by TSMC vis-à-vis tariff measures , as proposed by the incoming President does not look feasible as TSMC is not only supplier to Nvidia but has been traditionally supplying such chips to Huawei and other Chinese counterparts. As such, controlling TSMC with in geographical boundaries of US vis-à-vis Tariff measures, look to be a more feasible strategic policy. This is also important from an economic perspective as we need to consider the fact that in last 4 years the semiconductor chip companies have added more that $ 6 trillion dollars in valuation, of which 70 percent have been by fabless companies.
In this article for the DataQuest, I talk about how the upcoming U.S. administration could influence policies shaping trade, data security, and tech collaboration between the two nations. With shifting priorities and outlooks, India faces a unique combination of opportunies, threats and hurdles. Ultimately, the evolving India-U.S. relationship calls for a proactive national strategy for India that balances independence with strategic alignment.
