𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗯 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 Embodied carbon reduction is a key focus for designers aiming to create more sustainable buildings. Yet, in many medium and high-rise structures, we still see unnecessarily high concrete consumption. With floor slabs accounting for 50–66% of a structure's concrete, optimizing slab design represents one of the most impactful opportunities to lower embodied carbon. Here’s how we can make a difference: • 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗯𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻: By using post-tensioned slabs and limiting floor spans to under 6–8m, we can achieve the thinnest possible flat slabs, typically ~200mm. This drastically reduces the amount of concrete required without compromising structural performance. • 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: More closely spaced columns don’t have to mean compromised layouts. In residential projects, thin columns can be incorporated within partition walls, creating alignment between structure and architecture while reducing concrete usage. • 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀: All too often, a “make-it-work” approach results in substantially thickened slabs due to poor coordination. Developers can play a vital role by consulting engineers early in the design process and setting clear concrete efficiency targets, typically 0.3–0.45m3/m2 depending on building type and height. This ensures sustainability is prioritized from the outset. At KPM, we’re committed to designing innovative, low-carbon solutions that align sustainability with performance and cost-efficiency. Through early collaboration and thoughtful engineering, we can create a built environment that meets the demands of today while preserving resources for tomorrow.
