The old satellites still circle above the Arctic like tired sentinels, their cameras recording the steady retreat of ice that had stood frozen for millennia. Below them, a new kind of cold war unfolds – one where temperatures rise even as tensions freeze. As the Earth’s ice sheets melt away, a burning desire rises among the world’s eminent powers to claim the rare earth elements that lie beneath– the same elements that power the smartphone in our pockets and the electric vehicles that crowd our streets. The irony is rich: the same global warming that threatens our very way of life is now making these treasures accessible to the world's superpowers. Each year, the ice retreats further as global warming heats up, melting away the polar ice caps, faster than any model predicted. The permafrost, frozen for thousands of years, now releases ancient methane into the atmosphere, accelerating the warming in a vicious cycle. And as mining surveys cut across pristine tundra, and seismic vessels probe the seafloor for oil and gas deposits worth trillions, the sad truth is the symptoms of climate change – and the devastating feedback loops that could destabilize the entire planet's climate system - are being treated as an economic opportunity. The stakes are almost incomprehensible. Beneath the Arctic ice and permafrost lies an estimated $30 trillion in untapped resources. Rare earth elements essential for everything from wind turbines to military guidance systems. Oil and gas reserves that could power the global economy for decades. And perhaps most crucially, control over new maritime routes that could reshape global trade. The implications stretch far beyond the Arctic Circle, holding the power and potential to determine the future of human civilization. The decisions made in the next few years will influence not just who controls these crucial resources, but whether their extraction will accelerate us past climate tipping points from which there is no return. Justdial, India’s no. 1 local search engine, unveils its comprehensive ‘How India Searched in 2024’ report, offering a fascinating glimpse into the diverse and evolving search habits of Indians. Search trends show a stark contrast between Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, with Tier 2 searches registering 112% more searches than Tier 1 cities, showcasing an expanding digital footprint beyond metropolitan areas. The analysis reveals that while certain categories like healthcare, wellness, education, and leisure hold universal appeal across urban and semi-urban areas, the priorities and growth trajectories differ significantly. The healthcare & medical services category recorded a 24% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth in searches, solidifying its place as one of the most actively searched sectors. Close behind, the wellness & personal care sector surged by 7% YoY growth as Indians embraced self-care and rejuvenation. Skincare has emerged as a major focus area with 15% YoY growth, underscoring the shift toward preventive care and wellness. The resurgence of travel and leisure was another defining trend of 2024, with searches for tourist attractions, hotels, travel agents, and taxi services witnessing a 27% year-on-year (YoY) growth. Tier 2 cities emerged as key drivers of this growth, recording a 30% YoY increase in travel-related searches, outpacing Tier 1 cities, which saw a 19% YoY growth. Food and dining remained integral to the Indian experience, with categories like restaurants, tiffin services, caterers, cake shops, and coffee shops/cafés consistently ranking among the most searched terms. One dish stands out as the undeniable favourite: Biryani, maintaining its place at the top of the search charts.
