When treating pediatric or adolescent patients with both hearing loss and autism spectrum disorder, numerous important considerations are required. Join Aneesha Pretto, advanced rehabilitation manager, Donna Sperandio, senior rehabilitation manager, and guest Michelle Dampf, speech-language pathologist, as they discuss these complexities. Michelle offers valuable tips for professionals: • Provide caregivers with an experience book their child can look through before appointments. • Incorporate special interests into their appointments to build rapport.  • Use visual cues, especially at the start of treatment. 🎧 Listen to the full podcast here: https://lnkd.in/gaAUanrc 📺 Watch the full episode on MED-EL Academy: https://lnkd.in/dJP_3eyc #AuralRehabilitation #Podcast #SLPeeps #CochlearImplants #HearingLoss #Autism

The first in-human results with a novel totally implantable cochlear implant (TICI), developed by MED-EL, have been published. In this feasibility study, Lefebvre et al. (2025) evaluated the safety and performance of TICI in six adults with bilateral severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. “Results show that the TICI can be implanted via the conventional surgical approach. The data suggest that the TICI can yield hearing performance comparable to that of a conventional CI and can provide substantially improved hearing and quality-of-life outcomes for users.” Due to the nature of a feasibility study, “these conclusions can only be tentative at present.” Read the study here (open access): https://brnw.ch/21wQ5WM #CochlearImplants #Innovation #HearingSolutions

Happy International Mentoring Day! 👥💬 This year is particularly special as Hearpeers celebrates its 10th anniversary. Since the project began, our Hearpeers Mentors have supported individuals on their hearing implant journey by providing invaluable firsthand experience. Over the past year, we’ve asked them to tell us their favorite sounds. From rain and birds to loved ones’ voices, their answers remind us of the joy that hearing implants can bring. Their unique insights inspire candidates and can complement clinical care by offering real-world perspectives on life with an implant. The Hearpeers project launched in the UK in 2015 with just a handful of Mentors. In the last decade, the project has grown to over 150 Mentors from 34 countries. Thanks to all our Mentors for a decade of dedication, support, and celebrating sounds! Learn more about Hearpeers here: https://brnw.ch/21wQ4ww

Adapt the implant and electrode to fit the patient, not the other way around. This is our philosophy at MED-EL. “We know there’s a huge variation in sizes from cochlear lengths. The organ of Corti, the cochlear duct length varies from 25– 36 millimeters. Really this is a 50% change, from one patient to another patient,” says Prof. Paul van de Heyning, “This is a huge advantage that we can individualize the choice of these electrode lengths.” MED-EL offers an extensive variety of electrode lengths so surgical teams can customize the implant for each patient based on individual cochlear measurements. What information are cochlear implant candidates searching for? A 2024 study identified the top 10 questions asked about CIs and CI surgery, including: 1. What is the most advanced cochlear implant? 2. What is the life expectancy of a cochlear implant? 3. Is a cochlear implant major surgery? 4. What is cochlear implant surgery? With candidates and their families frequently turning to the internet for answers, it's crucial to offer transparent, candidate-friendly resources that simplify complex information. In their study, Benaim et al. concluded that by recognizing potential gaps in online education, CI teams could adjust “their counseling and patient education materials to enhance patient understanding” to better support them in their decision-making process. You can read more details of this study from The Laryngoscope here: https://brnw.ch/21wPZjI At MED-EL, we are pleased to provide a wide range of content to support your candidates.
