It’s been interesting to see the polar extremes that people most often take when it comes to AI today. One posture - This is the awesomest thing for humankind since fire! The magic pill, the answer to all our problems. Dah, dah... Another posture - This is going to be sentient soon and it's poised to disrupt our beautifully protected wall-gardens and life as we know it. We should be worried as hell. And another one - Duh! This seems to be just a glorified sentence predictor. What’s the big deal? Every walking day I end up talking to executives who are either "all-in" or "all-freeze" when it comes to AI. Makes me wonder, is there a most appropriate response and a mindset to this? I’ve come to understand that what we’re seeing is a natural unfolding process of iterative research and constant experimentation. Yes, there are going to be immense breakthroughs that we haven’t anticipated or even imagined yet. And yes, there is going to be a graveyard of terrible smelly ideas that don’t see the light of the day. To the credit of deep learning, one undeniable truth seems to emerge in recent years - For every naysayer of this approach, say, when applied to a specific use case, deep-learning has proven its value and mettle time and again; To solve that use case to a sufficient degree. Having a perfect ring-side view ("sitting on the sidelines until the thing matures") doesn’t seem to be the right response then. Neither is delusional optimism (a.k.a. "this is magic pill is the answer to all our problems"). One needs to jump in the ring, commit to experiment, be willing to pay the true cost of experimentation, and understand the beast. Let the process of constant tinkering, iterating, learning unfold. A real way forward. Enjoyed our hackathon.
