Tunnels can often go unnoticed, but these complex feats of engineering sit at the heart of some of the most remarkable projects worldwide. 🚇 Jonathan Baber's journey from student to one of our #Fellows was never about building a personal tunnelling legacy. Instead, he built a career dedicated to achieving great things with the people around him, from his work on projects such as the Øresund Tunnel in Denmark to his involvement with the International Tunnelling Association. In this video, Jonathan talks about the importance of sustainable design in tunnelling and the role of hidden infrastructure, like metros, in reducing carbon usage. His curiosity has led to his involvement in #tunnelling projects that have benefitted local communities around the world and to supporting the next generation of technically skilled engineers. We’d love to know what satisfying career moments helped to #ShapeYourStory. Share them in the comments below.

Building mechanically lowering weirs for flood alleviation and advising on the largest ever natural flood management scheme were some of the UK engineering firsts that were essential elements of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme. However, collaboration was also critical to delivering these innovations and this was achieved through building the right team with diverse design specialists, which turned into a 10-year relationship between us, Leeds City Council and BAM UK & Ireland as the scheme evolved. Discover how the team used hard engineering solutions combined with natural flood management techniques to extend the safeguard of the city against a 1 in 200-year flood through to 2069. https://mottm.ac/4b0zPCg #FloodAlleviation #FloodManagement #Innovation #HardEngineering

We were excited to attend the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s Industry Forum this week, where our west unit development manager, Andrew Gardner, heard from their CEO about his exciting vision and strategy for efficiently delivering the first high speed rail system in the United States. When complete, the integrated high speed rail network will connect the State's mega-regions of San Francisco and Los Angeles and deliver new options for longer distance travel within California. We’re proud to support the Authority with this exciting project, which will contribute to economic development, a cleaner environment, create jobs, and will be powered by 100% renewable energy.
Thanks to all of the industry experts and innovators that joined us at the California High-Speed Rail Authority's Industry Forum! 🚄💨 "It was very good to hear from the new CEO... The fact that he wants to engage with the industry to really get our thoughts and inputs on how to take the program forward and faster and more efficiently like he said, I think it's really good." - Andrew Gardner - Mott MacDonald #HSRIndustryForum

Small modular reactors (SMR) present huge prospects for both net zero and skills 🌟 We are pleased to share an insightful article by Ming Tan, our divisional technical excellence lead nuclear: defence and civils UK, published by New Civil Engineer. This article explores the significant potential of SMRs in achieving the UK's net zero targets and enhancing regional skills in the sector. 🔍 Ming highlights that the UK government aims to install 24GW of new nuclear capacity by 2050, a challenging task given the impending retirement of many current plants. SMRs are crucial to filling this capacity gap, with around 40 to 50 units needed. The repeatability of SMR design and the regularity of their construction are key success factors to achieve this goal. However, the nuclear industry in the UK faces a shortage of qualified personnel. As SMR projects are more akin to conventional power plants in terms of scale and size, Ming explains it’ll be easier for engineers to transfer skills from the conventional power and major infrastructure sectors into working on SMR projects. Read the full article to learn how deploying SMRs can help achieve the 24GW nuclear capacity target by 2050 and solve the nuclear industry's personnel shortage. 🌍🔋 https://mottm.ac/4hCf4zm #NuclearEngineering #TechnicalExcellence #Innovation #SMR #netzero #NuclearIndustry
