Artificial intelligence helps predict whether antidepressants will work in patients In patients with major depression disorder, it is now possible to predict within a week whether an antidepressant will work thanks to the use of artificial intelligence (AI). With the help of an AI algorithm, a brain scan and an individual's clinical information, researchers from Amsterdam UMC and Radboudumc could see up to 8 weeks faster whether or not the medication would work. The results of this study are published today in the American Journal of Psychiatry. "This is important news for patients. Normally, it takes 6 to 8 weeks before it is known whether an antidepressant will work," says Professor of Neuroradiology at Amsterdam UMC, Liesbeth Reneman. The research team analyzed whether they could predict the effect of the antidepressant sertraline, one of the most commonly prescribed drugs in the United States and Europe. In a previous study conducted in the United States, MRI scans and clinical data were administered to 229 patients with major depression before and after a week of treatment with sertraline or placebo. The Amsterdam researchers then developed and applied an algorithm to this data to investigate whether they could predict the treatment response to sertraline. #artificialintelligence #ai #machinelearning #technology #datascience #python #deeplearning #programming #tech #robotics #innovation #bigdata #coding #iot #computerscience #data #dataanalytics #business #engineering #robot #datascientist #art #software #automation #analytics #ml #pythonprogramming #programmer #digitaltransformation #developer

Navigating the AI Landscape in 2024: Make the Right Choices for Your Business 2024 has begun with a bang – and it might already feel like you’re playing catch-up with new technology, trends, and business demands for the year ahead. Generative AI—and the promise of AI for business at large – is top of mind across every department and position at almost any organization globally. So, how do you make the right AI choice for your company, your team, and your goals for 2024? Let’s break down that challenge, which might still feel too amorphous and ambitious to actually kick off. Understand your business objectives and needs. Don’t dive headfirst into vetting AI technology. Start first by looking inward. Success hinges on aligning the right AI solutions with your specific goals and needs within your business. Outline your objectives, call out your pain points, and possible areas for improvement. Make a bullet point list with as concise a statement for each area as possible. Make it a sentence—or less—for every topic area. Bring this to any meeting you have with an AI partner, and use this list as a guide to understand whether any AI solution or offering can directly address your pains and needs and how AI will help meet your business objectives. It’s important to understand that even the most sophisticated, polished, flashy technology can and will fail if it doesn’t address your needs. Find an AI partner who can understand and integrate your unique requirements into any implementation for your organization. In the business of AI, the thing to remember here is that generic is not enough: it has to be able to be tuned and trained to your business needs and goals. #CloudComputing #Security #DevOps #Cloud #HybridCloud #IIoT #IoE #InternetOfThings #DataScience #Analytics #MachineLearning #artificialintelligence #artificialintelligence #artificialintelligenceforbusiness #artificialintelligencefordesign #artificialintelligencetechnology #machine learning #deeplearning

This Week in AI: Do shoppers actually want Amazon’s GenAI? Keeping up with an industry as fast-moving as AI is a tall order. So until an AI can do it for you, here’s a handy roundup of recent stories in the world of machine learning, along with notable research and experiments we didn’t cover on their own. This week, Amazon announced Rufus, an AI-powered shopping assistant trained on the e-commerce giant’s product catalog as well as information from around the web. Rufus lives inside Amazon’s mobile app, helping with finding products, performing product comparisons and getting recommendations on what to buy. From broad research at the start of a shopping journey such as ‘what to consider when buying running shoes?’ to comparisons such as ‘what are the differences between trail and road running shoes?’ … Rufus meaningfully improves how easy it is for customers to find and discover the best products to meet their needs,” Amazon writes in a blog post. That’s all great. But my question is, who’s clamoring for it really? I’m not convinced that GenAI, particularly in chatbot form, is a piece of tech the average person cares about — or even thinks about. Surveys support me in this. Last August, the Pew Research Center found that among those in the U.S. who’ve heard of OpenAI’s GenAI chatbot ChatGPT (18% of adults), only 26% have tried it. Usage varies by age of course, with a greater percentage of young people (under 50) reporting having used it than older. But the fact remains that the vast majority don’t know — or care — to use what’s arguably the most popular GenAI product out there. GenAI has its well-publicized problems, among them a tendency to make up facts, infringe on copyrights and spout bias and toxicity. Amazon’s previous attempt at a GenAI chatbot, Amazon Q, struggled mightily — revealing confidential information within the first day of its release. But I’d argue GenAI’s biggest problem now — at least from a consumer standpoint — is that there’s few universally compelling reasons to use it. Sure, GenAI like Rufus can help with specific, narrow tasks like shopping by occasion (e.g. finding clothes for winter), comparing product categories (e.g. the difference between lip gloss and oil) and surfacing top recommendations (e.g. gifts for Valentine’s Day). Is it addressing most shoppers’ needs, though? Not according to a recent poll from ecommerce software startup Namogoo. #artificialintelligence

OpenAI releases new models and lowers API pricing OpenAI has announced several updates that will benefit developers using its AI services, including new embedding models, a lower price for GPT-3.5 Turbo, an updated GPT-4 Turbo preview, and more robust content moderation capabilities. The San Francisco-based AI lab said its new text-embedding-3-small and text-embedding-3-large models offer upgraded performance over previous generations. For example, text-embedding-3-large achieves average scores of 54.9 percent on the MIRACL benchmark and 64.6 percent on the MTEB benchmark, up from 31.4 percent and 61 percent respectively for the older text-embedding-ada-002 model. Additionally, OpenAI revealed the price per 1,000 tokens has dropped 5x for text-embedding-3-small compared to text-embedding-ada-002, from $0.0001 to $0.00002. The company said developers can also shorten embeddings to reduce costs without significantly impacting accuracy. Next week, OpenAI plans to release an updated GPT-3.5 Turbo model and cut its pricing by 50 percent for input tokens and 25 percent for output tokens. This will mark the third price reduction for GPT-3.5 Turbo in the past year as OpenAI aims to drive more adoption. OpenAI has additionally updated its GPT-4 Turbo preview to version gpt-4-0125-preview, noting over 70 percent of requests have transitioned to the model since its debut. Improvements include more thorough completion of code generation and other tasks. #CloudComputing #Security #DevOps #Cloud #HybridCloud #IIoT #IoE #InternetOfThings #DataScience #Analytics #MachineLearning #artificialintelligence #artificialintelligence #artificialintelligenceforbusiness #artificialintelligencefordesign #artificialintelligencetechnology #machine learning #deeplearning
