Pranay Agrawala and I attended recently attended the India Blockchain Summit 2024 at Delhi, organized by MeitY Startup Hub at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium. The event brought us face to face with the raw ambition latent in Digital India, and the rough edges of an emerging #web3 industry. There were approximately 1500 attendees at one time or another. The event was in two parts, the stage inside- hosting panel discussions, presentations and awards, and the kiosks outside, where conversations flowed. The discussion on ‘Trusting the trustless technology' was particularly interesting, as Mr. Dilip Chenoy from Bharat Web3 Association and the panelist explored the paradoxes of the web3 industry as it stands today. Outside the stadium, some promised to change the world, others focused on practical solutions, and a few left their intentions a bit… vague. Yet, each project brought a unique perspective on blockchain’s future. We connected with teams from Kalp Studio, AltVision Technologies, TRST01™-01, Qila.io, Anuvadini AI, amongst many more. Clearly a lot of diversity in the industry, some superb work being done. Unlike other overly optimistic web3 gatherings, this summit focused on hands-on engagement with the present. Maybe because of the absence of entry fee. Open source deserves free entry, as far as I’m concerned. When we spoke to the teams in attendance, we found them grappling with the complex, messy reality that is a web3 businesses. A sampling of our conversations: -How can one plan their business differently for issuing tokens versus one that helps others issue tokens? -Are #BaaS businesses any different from #SaaS business? Hype, marketing mystique? Is there a ‘there’ there? -Web3 & privacy, all hail the DPDP? -What's the complete addressable market of RWAs? Winner-takes-all or distributed outcome? Finternet? -Whats the difference between #DPI and #DPG? -Do we need tokens to solve the deep fake/misinformation problem? -Is there still value in private chains over public ones? Is this like the Intranet vs internet? -Can blockchain solve AI problems, and can AI solve blockchain problems? Technologies in silos = bad? -How does one run a compliant business that tokenizes batches of diamonds versus one that tokenizes carbon credits? Different carbons, different rules? -Corporate structuring versus product structuring. What's that about? -How many geographies do you need to spread yourself in if you want a global footprint with a global user base? Can you do it from only one country? -Which jurisdictions are the best for what activities, and what is the real cost of regulation or non-compliance? -Do you have to pay 1% TDS withholding if you are transferring derivative contracts and not the #VDA itself? It was discussion rich. Here's to more such discussions and actioning them.

India coming out smelling of roses in the latest #FATF report is a testament to the targeted efforts of various stakeholders, particularly the government agencies and ministries led by the FIU, along with multiple companies and their compliance teams. At the end of the day, it's teamwork that makes the dream work, and such reports are not achieved or received in isolation. Everyone must work together to effectively curb serious issues like money laundering and terror financing. Of course, this is not the end—there will always be a push and pull between good and bad actors in society. However, this is a strong indication that these efforts have made India proud. That said, one casualty of this success has been the availability of robust banking services for Web3 businesses. While India’s achievements in FATF compliance are laudable and worth celebrating, it’s important not to forget that many Web3 businesses are struggling to access the banking services they need to operate at full capacity. That’s where the rubber meets the road—because if banking services don’t come through, this industry will be competing with both hands tied behind its back. We’ve done well, but let’s make sure innovation isn’t left behind in the process.

🚀 India's VDA Industry Shines in FATF's Latest Evaluation! 🇮🇳💼 The recently released Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Mutual Evaluation Report marks a huge milestone for India’s Virtual Digital Assets (VDA) industry. With India now ranked as the second-largest VA market globally by estimated transaction volume, the report highlights the strength of our regulatory efforts and the proactive role VASPs (Virtual Asset Service Providers) are playing in ensuring compliance. 💪📈 The report, released after the June plenary meeting, marks a significant milestone for India. Following an on-site visit last November, India has been placed in the "regular follow-up" category, a distinction shared by only four other G20 nations. Here are 5 key takeaways for the VDA industry: 1. Strong Compliance & Risk Understanding: Indian VASPs demonstrated a solid understanding of AML/CFT obligations, integrating risk-based mitigation strategies like enhanced customer due diligence (CDD) and innovative identity verification methods. 2. Effective Role in High-Profile Cases: VASPs have been pivotal in helping law enforcement track suspicious transactions thereby contributing to national security. 3. Early Success in AML/CFT Controls: Despite being relatively new to the AML/CFT framework, Indian VASPs have shown an impressive commitment to preventive measures like collecting detailed customer information, implementing travel rule solutions, and integrating enhanced due diligence mechanisms. 4. Growing Confidence in AML/CFT Systems: India’s authorities and VASPs alike are being recognized for their growing sophisticated understanding of money laundering (ML) and terrorism financing (TF) risks, highlighting the industry's readiness for the next phase of regulation. 5. Travel Rule Adoption: The adoption of the Travel Rule by 18 out of 28 VASPs reflects the sector's dedication to global best practices, ensuring safe and compliant external transfers of virtual assets. As we continue to drive innovation and enhance regulatory standards, it’s clear that India’s VDA industry is stepping up to lead on a global stage. This is just the beginning of an exciting journey towards a secure and compliant digital future! (Sharing the link to the full report in the comments) #Web3 #BharartForWeb3 #India #VDA #AML #FinancialSecurity #CoinDCX #VASPs

Glimpses from Day One at TOKEN2049… It’s been a mad whirlwind at Singapore on day one, with meeting the small yet dedicated web3 lawyer community has been the most encouraging. Shumin Lin thank you introducing me to the larger group, you know who you are. Of course, hearing Vitalk Buterin speak about the next big thing in web3 was special. Highlight of the day was listening to Edward Snowden and the crowd interactions with him. Special shout out to Lewis Lau KuCoin Exchange for spending time with me. Finally we meet IRL. Onwards to Day 2. Keep watching this space. #token2049 #web3 #web3lawyers #singapore #lawandregulation #hodl

#INTA2024 at Atlanta, Georgia Ever wondered what keeps Coca-Cola's iconic formula safe for over a century? It’s the power of trade secrets! Nestled in a highly secured vault in the Atlanta factory, Coca-Cola's recipe exemplifies how businesses can protect their most valuable assets. Moreover, trade secrets are invaluable intangible assets. Coca-Cola famously leveraged its secret formula as collateral for a loan, highlighting the significant financial value they hold. Businesses should recognize and harness the value of their proprietary knowledge to stay ahead. #tradesecrets #cocacola
