Human Metapneumovirus, or HMPV as we know it, emerged in the Netherlands in 2001 however, the recent outbreak in China has alarmed the world. According to the American Lung Association, the likelihood of developing serious complications due to hMPV is seen in children with compromised immune systems and adults. It is most common in children below 5 years of age. In this session, Dr. Reddy has answered some common questions related to HMPV, its symptoms, its causes, risks, and above all how we can protect our children from it. RSV or Respiratory Syncytial Virus is a virus that affects the lungs and airways. It gives rise to symptoms somewhat similar to those common colds. According to research by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, RSV affects an estimated 64 million people and causes 160,000 deaths each year. Another report by the National Institute Of Health suggests the rates of RSV detection in younger children, lying in the age group of 0 to 5 years is quite high as compared to children from other age groups. The report also states that there is a peak in RSV during monsoon and winters.
