Dyed using only natural pigments, Tangaliya dupattas for women is the perfect compliment to any outfit. Originating from the Surendranagar district of Gujarat, the weaving craft of Tangaliya has been passed down for 700 years.These traditional fabrics feature intricate bead-like designs, known as daana work, that are handwoven using the Tangaliya technique on a pit loom. These motifs are inspired by nature. There are many stories behind a story as you delve deeper into history. I remember being blown away when I saw the striking black vases with beautiful silver and gold work on them at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Ironically, that was my first introduction to Bidri ware, an art form that originates from Bidar in Karnataka. Years later, when we decided to start Peepul Tree, we headed to Bidar in search of these jewels but found that artisans had stopped producing most of the old exquisite work on Bidri because it was costly and required a lot of effort. After much work, we finally developed a small jewelry box with intricate and rich silver inlay work, known as the Mehtabi kaam, which remains one of my favourites on Peepul Tree. A fun fact: Did you know that the iconic black base color of Bidriware can only be achieved in Bidar? The colour comes from the acidic soil around the Bidar fort, which is mixed as a solution to dip white metal in! Additionally, there was a time in the 15th century when Bidar was the most important power centre in the Indian subcontinent. Today, it’s like a ghost town with hauntingly beautiful monuments. There is always debate on whether we really need a Women's Day. Should it not be every day? Do we really need to call out just how much women are doing at work, at home, throughout history? As a staunch believer in 'equal' rights, I always tended to believe that we really don't need anyone to tell us that we are special - that is until we went deeper and deeper into History - which is really 'His' Story! At Live History India - Now Peepul Tree Stories, we took an early decision to change that. We opened a whole new section called HerStory, i.e., Women in History.
