*Big News in Data Privacy and Competition Policy!* The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has imposed a landmark penalty of over ₹213 crore on Meta for its data-sharing practices under WhatsApp's 2021 privacy policy update. This case highlights the growing importance of competition law in safeguarding user rights in the digital age. 🌐⚖️ Key Highlights from the CCI Order: 1. Unfair Conditions Identified: The CCI ruled that the 2021 privacy policy—offered on a “take-it-or-leave-it” basis—compelled users to accept expanded data sharing across Meta platforms without an opt-out option, violating Section 4(2)(a)(i) of the Competition Act, 2002. 2. Cease-and-Desist Order: WhatsApp is barred from sharing user data with other Meta entities for advertising purposes until 2029. 3.
