How to size a capacitor? 🤔 Though the capacitor sizing looks very easy and straight forward, there are many aspects which needs to be looked into while sizing the capacitor bank. Before jumping in, we need to understand there is displacement power factor, Distortion factor and then true power factor. There is a chance that capacitor bank may improve the displacement powerfactor where as this amplifies the harmonics and hence reduction in distortion factor (With nonlinear loads). True power factor may come down against the expectation of power factor improvement. Few aspects to has to be carefully looked into like 💎Selection of Rating 💎Selection of Voltage 💎Selection of Series Reactor (To reduce the inrush current and to act as harmonic filter to suppress some order of harmonics) 💎Selection of Breaker rating for capacitor bank 💎Selection of Protection Setting Reactive power generated by the capacitor bank is proportional to Square of the voltage available at its terminal and hence this may have severe impact on power factor at Point of interconnection for grid voltage fluctuation. Arc Flash Case Study for a Gold Mining Plant, Ghana We recently worked on a project to reduce arc flash risks and improve safety at a gold mining plant. Using ETAP software, we found ways to lower incident energy, improve relay settings, and suggest proper PPE for workers.
