During his time in Nepal, ProClime's CEO Kavin Kumar Kandasamy had a productive meeting with Nepal's Minister of Forest and Environment, Hon'ble Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri. Our CEO, Kavin Kumar Kandasamy with Erik Solheim, Global Climate Champion and 6th Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, and MP Rajendra Bajgain met with H.E. K.P. Sharma Oli, the Prime Minister of Nepal at his official residence in Kathmandu. 🤝 During the meeting, they discussed the urgent need to address climate change's impact on emerging economies, particularly the devastating effects on the Himalayan range. The Prime Minister expressed concern about the threat posed by accelerated glacial melt to downstream populations. In response, ProClime offered to partner with Nepal in developing impactful carbon projects, generating much-needed funding for climate mitigation and adaptation. Mr. Kavin also highlighted the importance of activating Article 6 markets for Nepal to leverage its climate services to the world. 🌎 The talks culminated with Nepal agreeing to host a government-led summit to protect Mt. The ‘Unlocking Green Monetisation of Nepal Hydropower’ event was held in collaboration between IHA, Independent Power Producers' Association, Nepal (IPPAN) and ProClime in Kathmandu on 31st January 2025. The event culminated in ProClime and the Independent Power Producers' Association of Nepal (IPPAN) signing a Memorandum of Understanding at the event for the issuance of up to 2,000 MW of International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs) for Nepal’s hydropower sector. Speakers at the event included IHA Board Member and President of the Belt and Road Green Development Initiative, Erik Solheim, and IHA Vice Chair Sushil Pokharel.
