That’s the provocative premise of Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box by The Arbinger Institute. It’s not just another leadership book—it’s a mirror, forcing you to confront how your mindset shapes your relationships, decisions, and outcomes. The book introduces a powerful concept: being “in the box.” This state happens when we see people not as individuals with needs and aspirations but as obstacles, tools, or irrelevancies in our path. It’s not always intentional, but when we’re in the box, it distorts how we treat others, leading to mistrust, disengagement, and poor collaboration. In a corporate context, this plays out daily. Think of a leader who micromanages because they believe their team lacks competence or an employee who resents feedback because they see it as criticism rather than guidance. The real kicker? The book reveals how deeply our “in-the-box” thinking reinforces itself—how we justify our actions by blaming others, which only entrenches the problem further. During a recent facilitation session, I found myself reflecting on one of the book’s core ideas: when we’re in the box, we don’t just see others inaccurately—we justify our behaviors by blaming them. One leader in the session shared how they constantly felt let down by their team. “They’re not proactive enough,” he said. As we unpacked this, it became clear that his own need for control and reluctance to delegate had created an environment where his team felt disempowered. This hit close to home for me. I recalled a time when I facilitated a workshop for a team struggling with collaboration. I assumed the issue was a lack of clarity in roles, but as the discussions unfolded, I realized the real problem was how team members perceived each other. They weren’t in conflict over tasks—they were in conflict over how they felt unseen and undervalued by their peers. The transformation came not from reworking workflows but from addressing how they “saw” each other. This shift isn’t just about empathy; it’s strategic. When teams feel seen and valued, trust deepens, collaboration improves, and results follow. The book doesn’t offer a checklist of leadership hacks—it pushes you to rethink how you lead at the core level. So here’s my challenge to you: read this book.
