The big question always is: Whats the impact? While there are numbers to show, it's the people and their stories of grit and progress that keep us going. It is: - the distance the money stored in a saree pallu has travelled to reach a bank account - a son's pride in the work his fathers does - the small drops of water (women) becoming a mighty ocean (SHG) - the waste entrepreneur operating a DWCC - children gaining agency to own and share their stories - having assurance and convenience of proper sanitation facilities - the joy of wearing a uniform and being part of formalised work - an opportunity to pursue paths despite challenges Here is a collection of footprints showcasing Saamuhika Shakti partners work in Phase 1 here: https://lnkd.in/g3GsVYFV BBC Media Action | Enviu | Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF) | Hasiru Dala | Sambhav Foundation | Social Alpha | WaterAid India | H&M Foundation | The/Nudge Institute

In Solidarity with Waste Pickers
About us
‘Saamuhika Shakti - In Solidarity with Waste Pickers’ is working to improve the quality of life of informal waste pickers and their families in Bengaluru. Our vision is to enable the waste pickers’ community to have greater agency to lead secure and dignified lives. The combined estimated population of informal waste pickers in Bengaluru is over 22,500, and despite being a critical part of the city’s solid waste management ecosystem the waste pickers and their families suffer a lot of hardships and challenges. This is a first of its kind project in India where different partner organisations like Bal Raksha Bharat, BBC Media Action, Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF), Enviu, Hasiru Dala, Sambhav Foundation, Social Alpha, WaterAid India, Udhyam Learning Foundation, and Sparsha Trust along with Sattva Consulting are joining forces to take a holistic approach to improve the living conditions of informal waste pickers. It also has a strong focus on equity, addressing the basic needs of marginalized groups such as women and girls in waste picker households. This project is initiated and supported by the H&M Foundation.

We are looking to hire a Head of Science at Without™ (by Ashaya). This is not a chill 9-to-5 job. We are solving messy problems, trying to change the status quo in many ways, and that doesn’t come easy. So if you want something easy and comfortable, please don’t apply. We are trying to build something at the confluence of deep impact and deep technology; that at the heart of it, wants to evolve capitalism. The next two years are the most important in the life of our work. We need to improve and prove our tech at scale. To help us get there, we are looking for an experienced someone at the intersection of many sciences, who loves to solve complex problems and cares about what we do. Someone who’s never short of ideas, someone who never stops reading and learning, someone who understands the irony of Maslow’s hammer and someone who can actually do, not just think. So if you care about solving some of the world’s deepest problems, and if you enjoy complexity, come work with us.

Read this 360-view article on the inclusive and circular textile waste management loop implemented by Saamuhika Shakti's partners — Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF), Hasiru Dala, and Sambhav Foundation — in Bengaluru: https://lnkd.in/gquFuPqh. It details a replicable and scalable model for post-consumer #textilewaste centred around creating value for the waste cloth and alternate #livelihood options for waste pickers. At the Textile Recovery Facility (TRF) in Bengaluru's Hirandahalli, run by waste picker-turned-entrepreneur Indumathi, used clothes are upcycled, recycled, downcycled, and resold—keeping them out of landfills. Between March and December last year, 1,31,000 kg of textile waste was diverted from landfills. The Hindu’s video takes us through the journey of textile waste in the city and explores solutions to this pressing problem. This week in the news! 📰 Bengaluru, as a city is leading the way in creating opportunities for a sustainable and circular economy. The Saamuhika Shakti initiative is one of a kind collaborative where multiple implementation organizations have joined forces to enable the city’s informal waste picker’s community with means to lead a meaningful and sustainable future. In this regard, we have seen an impressive cyclical process where waste collected by the communities are processed, and pushed through a variety of pathways where the waste is finally used to produce finished products; all of these at the hands of waste pickers and their families. Elizabeth Shilpa Abraham from the The Hindu explores this dynamic by shedding light on the various touch points of waste collection, segregation, management, and reuse/recycle/ disposal. Sambhav Foundation in this story highlights how waste picker candidates from our courses are a part of this process, in the final leg, where they use upcycled materials from partner organizations and manufacture products that gives them a means to a better income. This is enabled by the collaborations we have with Hasiru Dala, Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF), and TWIRL.STORE! Do give this story a read! In India, more than 80% of PET bottles are recycled, thanks to the value chain established around it. Collecting them makes it a valuable proposition for waste pickers too. The same has not been the case with used textiles. With no formal system in place to create value out of textile waste, most of it ended up in landfills making it among the top three items in landfills. Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF) and Hasiru Dala, in partnership with Saamuhika Shakti, have been working to see if they could come up with a solution. Under the initiative, used clothes are collected from individual houses, sorted, segregated and, depending on their quality, recycled, upcycled, downcycled or resold. This successfully diverted 1,31,000 kgs of cloth from reaching landfills last year between March and December and resulted in an 18-25% increase in the income of the waste pickers directly engaged with the programme. https://lnkd.in/gj9PGhTa #justtransition #wastemanagement #municipalsolidwaste #textilewaste #recycling

A deeply reported piece on managing post consumer textile waste. Did you know textile waste is the 3rd largest item in the landfills? So many clothes end up there because consumers don’t know what to do, & the waste pickers who take care of it didn’t have options to process it. Now Bangalore is showing the way! A circular model for used clothes that is also creating livelihood. This replicable and scalable model is centered around: 💸 creating value for the waste cloth ♻️ which creates an incentive for processing waste at the collection point (for the waste pickers) Following learnings from Bangalore, this model has been introduced it in multiple cities in Kerala too. A win win win model. For the consumer. For the waste picker. And for the environment! #textilewaste #livelihood #inclusivecircularity #circularity #textilecircularity
Cities everywhere are grappling with the issue of textile waste. Is there a way out, other than it ending up in the landfill? Yes, Bengaluru is showing the way! And that it can be done, while also ensuring waste pickers have a role in the waste value chain, as collectors, entrepreneurs and upcyclers of post consumer textile waste. Read today's report in The Hindu on our partners—Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF), Hasiru Dala, and Sambhav Foundation—impactful effort in inclusive circularity. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gquFuPqh Sattva Consulting | H&M Foundation | Maria Bystedt | Fernanda Drumond | Linda Hilmgård | Gayathri Vasudevan | Dhanya Chandregowda | Mohammed Shafiulla R | Dr Padmini Ram | Pushpa N. | Venkat Kotamaraju | Rahul Chatterjee | Somatish Banerji | Kanishka Dasgupta | Ashna Abi | Nalini Shekar | Chinmayi Naik | Mouna Balakrishna | Bianca Fernandes | Aarti Mohan | Pradeep Sharma | Arjun Bahadur | Bobbymon George | Zibi Jamal | Shruti Venkatesan | Shantanu Dubey | Divya Puramshetty | Simran K | Ekta Sawant #inclusivecircularity #textilewaste #collectiveimpact #wastemanagement #bengaluru
