About us
Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), the first integrated steel plant in the public sector in India, was set up with German collaboration with an installed capacity of 1 million tonne in the mineral-rich north-western tip of the state of Odisha. Its 1st Blast Furnace ‘Parvati’ was lighted up by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India on 3rd February 1959. Subsequently, its capacity was enhanced to 2 million tonnes of hot metal, 1.9 million tonnes of crude steel and 1.67 million tonnes of saleable steel. After implementing a massive modernisation and expansion, Rourkela Steel Plant has enhanced its capacity to 4.5 million tonnes of Hot Metal and 4.2 Million Tonnes of Crude Steel. The Modernisation and Expansion of Rourkela Steel Plant was dedicated to the Nation by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi on 1st April 2015. RSP was the first plant in India to incorporate LD technology of steel making. It is SAIL’s only plant that produces silicon steels for the power sector and high quality pipes for the oil & gas sector. Its wide and sophisticated product range includes various flat, tubular and coated products. The Odisha group of Mines of Rourkela Steel Plant has in its ambit 4 Iron ore mines at Bolani, Barsuan, Kalta and Taldihi. With a combined annual capacity of 20.05 Million Tonnes per annum these mines are not only fulfilling the requirements of SAIL Plants, but are also supplying raw material to external customers. The picturesque steel city of Rourkela presents a visage of greenery that will be the envy of many a garden city. The area that was once a patch of dry land has been transformed to a verdant paradise through sustained afforestation and tree plantation programmes organised by Rourkela Steel Plant. Girdled with a hill range and dotted with a number of parks, nurseries, gardens and massive road side plantations, the Steel City is a nature lover’s dream come true.
