As the world increasingly converges into a chip, it has become imperative to have a robust Intellectual Property (IP) Policy for India to remain a semiconductor leader more so when China and South Korea emerge as competitors. Relatively, India stands 24th in the ranks of patent filings while the dismal private showing is a concern with the IITs and the CSIR mostly dominating the national scene. The Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) with its potential to ‘bank the unbanked’ and attract credit card spenders in the e-commerce era has skyrocketed globally. In India, it is slated to grow 15x by 2026. But the ‘phantom debt’ is worrying the regulators worldwide. However, in the zeal to counter its abuse and maintain transparency, it has to be recognised that BNPL is “at best a result and not the root of today’s hyper-consumerism”.
