I have always heard skepticism about insurance as a category, primarily due to customer experience at the time of claim. This skepticism has its nuances. There is a category of people, who disklike private sector insurers. Once, the promoter of a large apparel manufacturer equated the foreign insurance JVs in India to the erstwhile East India Company. Another category of people, dislike intermediaries of any kind. They believe that economics are much better when you deal directly with insurers. A third category prefers to buy the bare necessary coverage to meet compliances. This category considers all add-on cover such as a Fire Loss of Profit, merely cosmetic. If you speak to an experienced industry professional, most will find these objections amusing. Many of them can cite numerous personal anecdotes to the contrary. However, I have found the best way to address these objections is data. The more granular the data, the more credible the conversation. I strongly feel that such transparency would help build trust and increase insurance uptake. Congratulations to IBAI - Insurance Brokers Association of India for being persistent with their initiative to bring more transparency in the ecosystem.
