All India Federation of Self- Employed Women's Association
About us
The Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) is a labour union of poor self-employed women workers in the informal economy. Since its inception in 1972 by Smt. Ela Bhatt in Gujarat, SEWA has actively employed women with no employer or fixed employer-employee relationship. These women are often not represented by traditional trade unions, and their methods of organisation cannot be employed in a sector in which the work and employers are not recognised. SEWA was born in the shape of a confluence of three movements: labour, cooperative and women. The rapid progress made by SEWA in organising women in Gujarat lead to a demand for creation of similar organisations in other states too. SEWA Bharat was thus set up in 1982 in response to this demand. Its main aim is to facilitate the formation of new member organisations across the country and to promote their growth and development. SEWA Bharat is, therefore, a federation of SEWA member organisations, with the mandate to highlight issues concerning women working in the informal sector, and to strengthen the capacity of the organisations that serve the interests of these women. Presently nine such SEWA member organisations are working in 50 districts of Nine states, and together they accounted for a total membership around 13 lakhs and counting. SEWA Bharat concentrates on the following: -Employment -Income -Nutritious food -Health Care -Housing -Asset -Organised Strength -Leadership -Self Reliance -Education -Child Care

🌟Celebrating the strength, resilience, and innovation of women entrepreneurs! On this #WomensEntrepreneurshipDay, SEWA Bharat stands with women entrepreneurs in the informal economy. A recent 2024 report, titled ‘Decoding the Financial Health of Women-Owned Micro-Businesses in India’, by MicroSave Consulting (MSC), Sa-Dhan and JPMorganChase, highlights that 45% of women entrepreneurs lack savings for financial emergencies, leaving them vulnerable to economic shocks. With the right tools, support, and resources, we can enable these women to overcome challenges, achieve their business goals and nurture them towards financial independence. 💼 ✨ 🚀 Let’s build an inclusive future where women entrepreneurs are leading the way! Street vendors play a crucial role in urban economies worldwide, providing affordable goods and services to communities. Yet, despite their contributions, many vendors, especially women, face daily obstacles, from harassment and violence to inadequate access to basic facilities like toilets and drinking water. In many areas, vending is even criminalized. On this International Street Vendors Day, celebrated on 14th November every year, we bring you the inspiring story of Rita Ben, a fruit vendor from Dimapur, Nagaland. Through life’s challenges and the hurdles of her work, Rita Ben has emerged resilient and hopeful for the future. Anasuya Diwas is celebrated on the 11th of November every year to mark the birth anniversary of Anasuya Sarabhai, a champion of women’s rights in India. Anasuya ben was deeply moved when she saw the plight of women mill workers returning to their homes after a 36-hour shift in Ahmedabad. This started her lifelong journey of working towards improving the working conditions of mill workers. This Anasuya Diwas, we highlight how SEWA continues to honour Anasuya Sarabhai's work. 'Anasuya', a Hindi newspaper published fortnightly, captures anecdotes, opinions, stories of struggles and achievements of SEWA members across 18 states. The publication is written solely by our members and aims to sensitize and reorient media to the needs of women in the informal economy. You can read all Anasuya editions on our website by clicking the following link: https://lnkd.in/d23YHPbw SEWA in Delhi #AnasuyaDiwas #informalwomenworkers #anasuyasarabhai #elaben #SEWABharat

On this International Day of Care and Support, we highlight the global gender inequality in taking up both paid and unpaid care work. More often than not, women shoulder both paid and unpaid caregiving responsibilities. With the number of care recipients (both children and the elderly) expected to reach 2.3 billion by 2030 (Source: International Labour Organization), the need of the hour is to create systems that not only recognize the need for caregiving but also fairly compensate those engaged in the paid care economy. In India, paid care workers often find their work undervalued and underrepresented. Domestic workers, ASHA workers and anganwadi workers, who come under the ambit of paid care workers in India, struggle to access social protection and fair wages. At SEWA Bharat, we believe in inclusive social protection for all workers, especially those in the informal economy who make invaluable contributions to society. What are some ways in which paid care workers can be compensated fairly and can easily access social protection? Tell us in the comments below! Welcome to this special edition of the SEWA Bulletin. The months of August and September have been quite exciting here at SEWA Bharat. In August, we observed National Handloom Day, where handloom weavers had the opportunity to interact with labour officials and gain knowledge about the 'Bina Mulya Samajik Suraksha Yojana (BM-SSY)' scheme and an initiative that provides cash support for loom shed repair and subsidised yarn for weavers. Having recently begun work with waste workers in Dhapa, West Bengal, we shed light on their challenges and efforts to ensure occupational safety. In September, we commemorated our annual ‘Aagewan Diwas’, to celebrate and honour our grassroots leaders. We wrapped up the month with our 40-year celebration where women workers from different states came together as one. Additionally, we bring to you an impactful story of one of our members who was instrumental in bringing about positive changes in her community through her efforts. Stay tuned for a dedicated newsletter on the 40-year celebration of SEWA Bharat! #SEWABharat #SEWABharatnewsletter #LinkedInNewsletter
