  • How OT evaluate the skills of patients with autism? In the assessment of a patient, the occupational therapist (OT) may utilize various screening tools such as an ASD checklist, a sensory profile, the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), or the diagnostic criteria outlined in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR). When observing the patient, an OT focusing on autism will take into account the following skills: Social: This includes examining the patient's interactions with others, their ability to regulate emotions, their behavior, their desire for personal space, their eye contact, and any signs of aggression. Communication: The therapist will assess the patient's speech and non-verbal communication abilities. Cognitive: This involves evaluating the patient's attention span and stamina in various activities. Sensory: The therapist will observe the patient's responses to different stimuli, their tendency for sensory seeking behaviors, and any signs of sensory defensiveness. Motor: This encompasses an assessment of the patient's posture, balance, and their ability to manipulate small objects. #assessment #autism #evaluation #social #cognitive #behaviours #motor #communication #sensory #slrc

  • Generalisation: The capacity to utilize a newly acquired skill across different environments, with various tools, and in the company of different individuals is essential. Remember the power of applying a learned skill in diverse settings, with various materials, and among different people. It's crucial to plan for generalization right from the start when teaching a new skill. Identify where, when, how, and with whom the skill can be utilized. Generalization doesn't always happen naturally, so it needs to be intentionally targeted. This approach enhances students' comprehension of the skill's versatility. The ability to generalize can significantly impact a person's independence and future success. Here are the solution or strategies for generalisation: ·       Remember to utilize materials that are naturally motivating and meaningful to the individual. Establish connections to the client's existing knowledge base. ·       Introduce new materials gradually and systematically over time. ·       Whenever possible, teach in natural environments and incidentally. ·       Present alternative approaches to performing tasks. ·       Encourage consistent and sufficient practice to support learning. ·       Involve peers in the process of teaching new skills. ·       Ensure the individual's goals are communicated to their work, school, and home environments. #CBT #ADHD #PTSD #Anxiety #Depression #sensoryprocessing #Autism #eatingdisorder #slrc #behaviourtherapy #occupationaltherapy

  • Risk Factors of Alzheimer's: Age: Advancing age is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer’s. Most diagnosed cases are 65 or older, but younger-onset Alzheimer’s affects those under 65.  Family History: If a parent or sibling has Alzheimer’s, your risk is higher due to genetic and environmental factors. Genetics: Certain gene variants, including APOE-e4, increase the chance of Alzheimer’s. Deterministic genes guarantee the disease, but they are rare. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI): MCI increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s but does not always progress. Cardiovascular Health: Factors that cause heart disease may be linked to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s, including smoking, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Education: Fewer years of formal education are linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, possibly due to fewer neuron connections in the brain. Traumatic Brain Injury: Moderate or severe traumatic brain injury increases the risk of Alzheimer’s, especially in cases of repeated brain injuries.
