It was a good November 2024 for #aircargo with 8.2% demand growth nearly doubling the 4.6% growth in #cargocapacity according to the latest figures released by International Air Transport Association (IATA). This growth was reported for 16th consecutive month Fuel costs tracked at 22% below previous-year levels and tight market conditions supported yield growth at 7.8%. Looking at the above factors, #IATA hopes to that #2024 #aircargo performance will close on a profitable note. #IATA further expects that this strong performance will extend into 2025, but cautions on some downward risks like #inflation, #geopoliticaluncertainties and #tradetensions. #IATA further shared several factors in the operating environment that contributed to the above growth like the rise in industrial production by 2.1% in October 2024 as compared to Oct 2023. Growth in the global goods trade by 1.6% for seventh consecutive month. The Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for global manufacturing output was above the 50-mark for November 2024, indicating growth. However, the PMI for new export orders remained below the 50-mark, suggesting ongoing uncertainty and weakness in global trade. US headline inflation, based on the annual Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose by 0.1 percentage points to 2.7% in November. In the same month, the inflation rate in the EU increased by 0.2 percentage points to 2.5%. China’s consumer inflation fell to 0.2% in November, continuing concerns of an economic slowdown. Robust #businesstravel demand and #passenger demand will lead to further growth in cargo market as per the latest forecast by Association of Asia Pacific Airlines Preliminary November 2024 traffic figures released show that the growth in shipment volumes was driven by sustained #ecommerce demand and the front-loading of export orders ahead of anticipated US tariff hikes in November 2024. International #aircargo demand, measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTK), increased by 10.5% year-on-year, slightly outpacing a 10.0% rise in offered freight capacity. Consequently, the average international freight #loadfactor edged up by 0.2 percentage points to 62.3% for the month. Driven by increased demand going into the year-end holiday season, air cargo markets saw healthy growth in November, contributing to a strong 14% year-on-year increase for the first eleven months of the year. Persistent operational challenges in maritime shipping and anticipated US tariff hikes further bolstered demand. Looking ahead based on current trends, 2024 is anticipated to conclude on a positive note for cargo markets. However, uncertainty about the global economy and supply chain disruptions pose challenges to the region’s carriers. Asia Pacific airlines remain well-poised to navigate these challenges whilst maintaining the highest safety and service standards. Indian air cargo traffic is expected to grow from 3.7 million tonnes today to between 5 and 5.8 million tonnes by 2029 or about 6-9 percent per year in the coming five years, according to the latest report - India Air Cargo Outlook 2025-2029 by Trade Data Service by Trade and Transport Group published in January 2025. The forecast range for Indian #aircargo volumes in the next five years is between 6.2 and 9.1%, higher than recent performance, but in line with longer-term performance through 2019. The report further expects Indian #aircargo market to outperform the overall global market. Calling the year 2024 as the year of #recovery, the report claims Indian air cargo market's recovery is now complete with both the international and domestic volumes higher than their respective 2018 and 2019 peak levels. The Indian international #aircargo market outperformed both the global and Asia Pacific average and is on track for around 19% in 2024 with the domestic cargo growth reported between 6-8%. Indian domestic air cargo grew between 6 and 8% . Overall airport tonnage handled is expected to be in the order of 14%. In terms of Indian international air cargo volumes, Delhi and Kolkata underperformed, while Southern Indian airports showed above average performance. While Delhi underperformed internationally, domestic volumes increased by 14%. At a route level, data for the first half of the year shows strong performance for Southeast Asian freight, but weaker performance in other markets. Direct India to Europe as well as traffic via the Gulf accounted for about two-thirds of Indian international air cargo. Year-to-date trade data through to October showed an increase of air trade between India and Europe in the order of 16% compared to 2023. Global #airfreight rates eased lower during the first week of the year, according to the latest data from TAC Index. The global Baltic Air Freight Index (BAI00) fell -3.7% over the week to 6 January as the traditional peak season period ended and as usual volumes declined. Nevertheless, the index starts the year comfortably above where it was 12 months ago – when there had been a steep fall after peak season – to leave it ahead by some +25.9% year-on-year, and the outlook is still relatively buoyant, sources suggest. The fall in rates over the week was most pronounced on the big export lanes out of China, with falling spot rates leading the overall indices lower. The index of outbound routes from Hong Kong (BAI30) dropped -11.1% WoW, though is still in positive territory by +14.0% YoY. Outbound Shanghai (BAI80) also dropped by -6.8% WoW, though still well ahead by some +37.6% YoY. Rates to Europe were still rising out of Bangkok and Vietnam, though falling from Vietnam to the US – and slightly lower on lanes from India in both directions. Out of Europe, rates were also generally rising on major lanes to China and Japan as well as to the US. The index of outbound routes from Frankfurt (BAI20) surged +19.8% WoW led by a sharp rise in rates on Transatlantic routes during the first week of the year, leaving that index ahead by some +40.8% YoY from last year’s relatively depressed levels. Outbound London (BAI40) also saw rates to North America rising but fell overall by -5.8% WoW to leave it ahead by +19.4% YoY. From the Americas, the index of outbound routes from Chicago (BAI50) also saw a big rebound from the holiday lull during the first week of the year, surging +16.3% WoW to leave it ahead by +30.9% YoY. Overall rates from the US were slightly lower to Europe, but up to South America and rising strongly to China. India's #aircargo industry is expected to experience significant growth in 2025, with air #cargovolumes projected to increase by 9–11% year-on-year. This growth is expected to be driven by a number of factors, including: Expanding #freighter fleets, improving cargo #infrastructure, supporting #ecommerce and manufacturing and establishing India as a global #airlogistics hub. India's dedicated freighter fleet has tripled since 2017 with efforts to improve cargo infrastructure are gaining momentum. India's booming e-commerce and high-value manufacturing industries are expected to support the growth of the air cargo industry just as India is working to establish itself as a global hub for air logistics. Let us look at the short-term and long-term implications of the turmoil in Bangladesh air cargo market. Shippers are facing hefty #demand surcharges and shrinking margins. These increases are driven purely by a supply/demand imbalance, demonstrated in the fact the air cargo load factor from Bangladesh to Europe hit 97% in the week ending 25 August. This will likely prompt some shippers with urgent cargo to re-route from Dhaka and truck it to alternative air freight hubs, such as Delhi and Kolkata in India – such events were previously observed during the height of the Red Sea crisis. There is currently also a financial incentive for shippers to re-route supply chains away from Bangladesh. In the week ending 25 August, the air cargo spot rates from India to Europe and North America were USD 3.14 per kg and USD 4.78 per kg respectively, which is about 30% lower compared to corridors out of Bangladesh. If we look at the long-term repercussions, Bangladesh will emerge from the civil unrest and flood waters will subside, but there may be a longer term impact if the turmoil of 2024 spooks shippers into shifting #supplychains to other regions. Currently, several global fashion brands are reportedly canceling orders from Bangladesh and shifting them to other #garment #exportmarkets such as Cambodia and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. This shift between Bangladesh and Southeast Asia underscores the interconnectivity of global air cargo markets. It is no longer enough to monitor individual corridors – shippers must think at a #global, #regional and #tradelevel. The uncertain geo-political landscape demands shippers to be able to react quickly to disruptions in their supply chain. Bangladesh, world’s second-largest #garmentexporter had to face the the wrath of civil unrest within its borders in early June along with knock-on impacts of conflict in the Red Sea throughout 2024 causing factory shut-downs and cargo stockpiles at sea and #airfreight terminals. Almost the entire air cargo industry is impacted by the #geopolitics and climate-related events have caused #turbulence across the world’s #aircargo #supplychains in 2024 – but few regions have been impacted as severely as Bangladesh. More recently in August, major #flooding halted rail and road transportation on the critical route between Chittagong and Dhaka. So the implications of these disruptions are serious particularly for importers in Europe and US. Bangladesh’s #aircargo market is very short-term oriented because about 70% of the capacity procured by #freightforwarders comes at a price which is valid for no more than a month. This series of adverse events led to outbound Bangladesh #aircargo #spotrates accelerating at one of the highest paces on record (+163% year-on-year) in the week ending 25 August, reaching their highest level in over two-and-a-half years. Bangladesh also holds the record for the highest air freight rate increase so far in 2024 across all global air corridors. More specifically, the #aircargo spot rate from Bangladesh to Europe, one of Bangladesh’s major corridors, exceeded its previous Red Sea peak in May by reaching USD 4.95 per kg in the week ending 18 August. The market did ease slightly in the week following the August peak, falling to USD 4.77 per kg. For context, the all-time record freight rate on this corridor was observed during the pandemic when it reached USD 5.71 per kg in mid-November 2021. The spot rate from Bangladesh to North America in the week ending 25 August reached its highest level in over two years, rising to USD 6.91 per kg. This is an increase of 127% compared to the same week in 2023. The scale of these increases is made all the more remarkable considering the market was in decline in the first half of 2023 when high #inventorylevels and weak demand from European and US consumers saw #aircargo rates fall back below pre-pandemic levels. This market stress is echoed in the ocean container market. For instance, the average spot rate to ship a 40ft dry container from Chittagong to North Europe stood at more than USD 6 300 in late August, which is +270% higher than 12 months ago.
