La Nina Hope Remain Feeble, MJO May Weaken too: The ENSO, IOD and MJO are broad indicators of the climate pattern over different parts of the globe. The seasonal pattern over the regional geographical divisions matters the most. The mountains over North India have omitted the active western disturbance and the entire region is alarmingly snow deficit. The Northeast Monsoon over the South Peninsula has barely managed a satisfactory note. Kerala and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are borderline deficit and have a shortfall of over 20%. Nino Indices Remain Inconsistent: Uncertainty Of La Nina Lingers The Nino indices turned warmer all across the equatorial central Pacific, and this does not augur well for the onset of La Nina anytime soon. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) index for the week ending 17th November was -0.73°C, making it the sixth consecutive week below the negative threshold, and a negative IOD event appears inevitable. The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) pulse was fairly active over the Indian Ocean during this week, gaining amplitude and portending well for increased convection over the Indian Seas. Equatorial SSTs showed a mix of positive and negative anomaly changes, rather insufficient to draw conclusive inference on the emergence of La Nina. An uptick in Northeast Monsoon activity is expected over South Peninsula for the next 4–5 days. Dry November For Delhi, Winters Missing Timelines: Delhi is still experiencing a protracted dry period, which is driving up pollution levels and generating a medical crisis that can only be resolved by rain. With minimum temperatures remaining above 15 degrees Celsius and reaching 16.2 degrees today- roughly 4 degrees above average- the first half of November may go down as the warmest on record. The problem has been made worse by a heavy layer of fog and smog, which has limited visibility to 100 meters and trapped terrestrial radiation, preventing temperature reductions. Parts of Punjab and Haryana have seen cooler temperatures due to cold winds, but the thick haze above Delhi NCR has prevented them from reaching the area. La Nina Pace Remain Sluggish, May Spill Over To January Next Year: La Nina is expected to be weak and truncated this season, with the possibility of a “No Show” not ruled out. Forecasters, including NOAA, had anticipated a clearer shift to La Nina by mid-year, but predictions fell short. The Nino 3.4 index has touched the threshold of -0.5°C twice in the last 8 weeks but reverted back to warmer conditions. The latest value of Nino 3.4 index for the week ending 11Nov2024 was -0.3°C, falling short of the mark. Formation of La Nina remains dubious and inconclusive in terms of timings, intensity, and duration. Winter Forecast 2024: Rainfall, Past Trends, and La Niña's Influence The ongoing buzz about La Niña started even before the Southwest Monsoon but has yet to materialize. El Niño and La Niña are Pacific Ocean phenomena where warming leads to El Niño and cooling leads to La Niña. Our expert meteorologists AVM GP Sharma and Mahesh Palawat discuss how La Niña and El Niño affect winter rainfall and temperature. Despite forecast agencies, including NOAA, predicting La Niña’s arrival by May 2024, ENSO-neutral conditions have persisted, suggesting any upcoming La Niña will likely be short and weak. La Niña usually emerges in April, peaks by November and fades by March, but this year’s delay until December (if it occurs) is unprecedented. Past data shows, that La Niña doesn’t necessarily correlate with harsher winters, though it can enhance winter rainfall. There are no major Western Disturbances to be seen at present which has kept temperatures high, with Delhi experiencing record warmth through October and mid-November. A weak Western Disturbance, which is arriving today, may bring rain and snow to Jammu and Kashmir (as witnessed previously at the higher reaches) but won't dramatically lower temperatures. November is expected to bring gradual cooling, with no sharp plunge forecasted for the next 10 days. Delhi air turns hazardous again! Why is it so and when to expect relief | Skymet Podcast EP-8: Winters arrive with huge health risks and challenges for the citizens caused by hazardously severe air pollution in Delhi NCR. As the temperature drops, the air becomes cold and settles close to the surface of the earth. When the wind is weak and there is little movement, dust and pollutants mix with fog, which worsens air pollution. This hazardous situation persists until winter rains wash away the pollution, offering temporary relief. In the coming days, Delhi’s pollution levels will remain dangerously high, but a breeze could bring some much-needed respite. We urge our audience to stay indoors and take necessary precautions during this challenging time. Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam Receive First Snowfall Of Season, Another Spell Likely Soon: Mid and higher reaches of Jammu & Kashmir received the first snowfall of the season. Resorts like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg are witnessing light snowfall. The region has been facing a persistent rainfall deficit since January, leading to water scarcity. A weak upper air trough brought the recent light snowfall, but, a stronger western disturbance is expected to affect the area from 12th to 16th November. This system will bring more widespread weather and a drop in temperatures. A broad clearance in weather activity is anticipated from 17th November onwards, with a possibility of hailstorms.
