Alumni-in-Residence (AiR), Class of 2025: "STEP Into Your Future: Notes from a Journey in Education, Social Enterprise, and the YIF" with Worrin Muivah (YIF '14) The Fellows engaged with Worrin Muivah, Founder & Director of STEP (Social Transformation and Educational Platform, North East). Worrin shared his insights, challenges and rewards of establishing social enterprises and addressing educational gaps in Manipur and the North-East through his work with STEP North East. He emphasized the power of collective cooperation, partnerships, and community engagement in making a difference. His personal stories and practical strategies for creating impactful change with limited resources resonated with the #YIFClassOf2025 sparking meaningful discussions about their own paths forward. STEP is a non-profit that focuses on bridging the opportunity and education gap between the urban and rural areas in North-East India. Since its inception in 2020, STEP has reached out to 6000+ students across 40+ schools and colleges in Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. STEP’s flagship program, STEP Fellowship which is an employability program for indigenous women has successfully placed 70% of its graduates in various jobs across different sectors in India and abroad. Worrin completed his Master’s in Development Studies, specializing in Human Rights, Peace and Conflict Studies from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Erasmus University, in The Hague, Netherlands. Prior to setting up STEP, Worrin was the Head of Marketing/Outreach and Senior Programme Manager at The Naropa Fellowship. Worrin has also worked with Amnesty International India in their “Undertrials Project” where he and his team successfully investigated the causes of excessive undertrial detention in the Indian prison system and campaigned for systemic change in the criminal justice system. They successfully published their findings in a report titled, “Justice Under Trial: A Study of Pre-trial Detention in India”. Thank you Worrin for the engaging session. STEP conducted a workshop on “Empathy and Professionalism in Healthcare: Enhancing Patient Centred Communication” for the staffs of Putuonuo hospital in Kohima on July 20,2024. The workshop was attended by doctors, nurses, paramedical staffs, administrative team and support staff numbering about 130 in total.

STEP will be conducting a workshop on “Effective Communication for Teachers” on 21st May for the teachers of Modern College, Piphema.

STEP will be conducting a workshop on navigating careers and the importance of developing one’s personality and communication skills in this journey at Talui village, Ukhrul district on 3 May and Peh village, Ukhrul district on 4 May. We look forward to having a productive time with the students of these two villages.

STEP will be conducting a workshop on “Effective Communication - Strategies for Education and Hospitality Professionals” for the staff of Educentre and Eduspace on 1st May, 2024.

STEP will be conducting a session on “Navigating Careers and Higher Studies After Graduation” for the students of Patkai Christian College on 30th April 2024. The last few months before graduation are often the most confusing stage for the majority of students. Some might have no clue whether to continue higher studies or start working, and many students end up making wrong decisions either out of panic or peer pressure rather than their own understanding. This session will address these fears and issues and shed light on the various possibilities that students can pursue after graduation. The focus will be on the various fellowships available post-graduation and how to apply for them. Additionally, it will cover the preparation needed to apply for scholarships abroad and how to convert one’s passion into a career in the 21st century.

Here are some snippets from today’s workshop with the staff of Dimapur’s post office. The staff were incredibly receptive and open to learning. We thoroughly enjoyed facilitating this workshop and wish the best to all the staff of Dimapur Post Office.

STEP will be conducting a workshop on "Effective Communication" tailored for the staff of the Dimapur Post Office on March 23, 2024. This initiative aims to equip our postal staff with enhanced communication skills to better serve our customers on a daily basis.

We had a wonderful time today with the NagaEd team during our “Effective Communication” workshop. We look forward to a continued partnership with Naga Ed to foster a revolution in our education system.
