TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute organized a side event on the topic 'Ecological Restoration of a Red Mud Dumpsite Through Vegetation' at the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on December 10. Red mud, a byproduct of the alumina refining process, poses one of the most significant environmental challenges associated with the aluminum industry. This highly alkaline residue contains toxic heavy metals, making it detrimental to ecosystems, human health, and sustainable land use. The event shed light on how ecological restoration, specifically through vegetation, offers a transformative path to rehabilitate these dumpsites into thriving ecosystems. It showcased the success story of the successful ecological restoration of a degraded red mud site at Muri, Jharkhand India. Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, TERI, gave the welcome address followed by Mr Aniruddh Soni, Fellow and Area Convenor, Land Resources Division, who explained the environmental challenges of red mud and its rehabilitation methodology. Dr Syed Arif Wali, Associate Director, Land Resources Division presented the success story of Muri Red Mud rehabilitation, and Mr Prasanta Bose, Assistant Vice President, Hindalco Industries Limited highlighted the efforts and practices adopted by HINDALCO for environmental sustainability. The event was chaired by Ms VL Roui Kullai, Inspector General of Forest, MoEF&CC, India, who presented her concluding remarks. TERI’s expertise in ecological restoration and its long-standing commitment to sustainable land-use practices have positioned it as a leader in tackling complex challenges like red mud dumpsite rehabilitation. Our integrated approach combines scientific research, technological innovation, and community involvement to drive impactful solutions for a greener and healthier planet. #ClimateChange #RedMud #EcologicalRestoration #UNCCD
