Over the past few posts, we have dived deep into sensory memory (the fleeting doorway to experience) and working memory (the brain's tiny, but mighty, workbench). In the latest edition of our newsletter, we explore the powerhouse of our cognitive system: long-term memory (LTM). We can imagine long-term memory as a vast spider web of knowledge and experiences. It is the ultimate goal of learning and the reason we remember a childhood vacation, a math formula from school, or how to ride a bike. Let’s take a look at how this intricate system works and why it is so vital to everything we do. https://lnkd.in/g4reR-x4 Things in Education is the weekly newsletter through which we share the latest in education research and developments in the form of accessible summaries and stories. There is such wonderful educational research conducted and published, but most of this research is inaccessible to those who would benefit from it the most – teachers. We at Things Education have been trying to make this research accessible to teachers through our newsletters, through visual summaries, and now through quick, concise, visual videos that still capture the nuances of the topics through our video series called TE Pedagogy Powerups. We are 31 videos in, and we upload a new video each week. https://lnkd.in/gn_jDNsJ Subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified each time we upload a new video, for bite-sized, continuous professional development. #pedagogy #powerup #teachers #teaching #tpd #cotinuouslearning #professionaldevelopment

In the 14th episode of TE Present Teacher, we speak about Artificial Intelligence or AI. And Gen-AI. And Language Learning Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Bard, and so on. We had consciously tried to avoid talking about a fast evolving discipline. But the faster a displine evolves, the faster the misconceptions around it evolve. So we thought of addressing some of them. We hope that our conversation puts Gen-AI somewhere between the panacea to all ills of education (that many claim it is) and a fancy fad which will die down. Watch the full episode here, and don't forget to subscribe: https://lnkd.in/gNNwfux5 TE Present Teacher is our podcast where we speak about cutting-edge ideas in education in a way that is accessible by educators and implementable in classrooms. We have in-depth discussions on pedagogy, classroom management, how learning happens, how forgetting happens and so on. #education #AI #ChatGPT #LLMs #edtech #aiforeducators #podcast

Interesting from Sal Khan (linked in the comments): 1. “To get the very best from this technology, we need to reconsider what is now possible.” 2. Don’t look for a problem that a tech solution can solve. Look for solutions for existing problems. 3. And most importantly: if the solution is pen and paper then so be it. If it is AI, so be it. Serendipitously we also discussed AI in education I our latest podcast (linked in the comments). Maybe I’m saying the quiet part out loud: is there some cooling on AI being the answer to personalised learning? A preschool in Bangalore that is using the unboxED Early Learning Curriculum by Things Education has been regularly using this 'feelings' tracker with their littlest students. Look at those two 'sad' and one 'calm' popsicle sticks! What I would have given to be able to put into, at 4 years of age, how I was feeling! One of the storybooks in our unboxED Early Learning Curriculum, titled 'How Do I Feel?', introduces Lower Kindergarten students to four feelings – happy, sad, angry, calm – in the form of a long poem. Cleo the Chameleon teaches Pia about the different feelings and associates them with different colours. The 'feelings tracker' is based on this storybook ♥️ The unboxED Early Learning Curriculum by Things Education is textbook-free, multi-sensory and aligned to the NCF-FS. Reach out to us at info@things-education.com or +91 9898469961 for a conversation about it. #emotions #SEL #earlylearning #storybooks #stories #poems

Mr. Singh teaches biology, and he teaches the life cycle of a butterfly by first showing the diagrams of the different stages of the butterfly life cycle – egg, larva, pupa, adult. Once the diagram is understood and practised by the students, Mr. Singh shares the description of each stage of the life cycle of a butterfly. Ms. Mehta, who also teaches the life cycle of a butterfly, uses a slightly different approach. She goes stage by stage, and for each stage, Ms. Mehta ensures that students are exposed to the diagram and the description together. Which approach do you think will reduce cognitive load on working memory of students? In a poll I put up a couple of days back, over 90% of respondents voted in favour of more newsletters, videos and posts by Things Education on the Cognitive Load Theory. And we heard you! The latest edition of our weekly newsletter is an overview of a cognitive theory of learning called the Atkinson-Shiffrin Model of Memory, or the Information Processing Model. We've summarised it down to the key features of the three memory registers in this edition, and over the next several editions, we will go deeper into each memory register, into cognitive load, into recalling, remembering and forgetting, and into principles of lesson planning and teaching. The link to the 83rd edition of our newsletter is in comments.
