  • "Ads are the DRUG MONEY of MARKETING" The teacher stood at the front of the classroom, holding up a stack of papers. “This is your pledge,” she said. “By signing it, you’re agreeing to stay away from drugs and alcohol.” One boy sat quietly, thinking. Finally, he spoke up. “You wouldn't want me to sign something I don't completely believe in would you?” he asked. The teacher looked surprised. “What do you mean?” she asked. The boy looked serious. “It’d be great if people didn’t get addicted to drugs,” he said. “But... people are addicted to drugs. And to get the drugs, they have to buy them, right? And that drug dealer has to feed his family. They’re innocent. They can’t starve, can they? They need a house and clothes. And the family needs a car.” The classroom was completely silent as he continued. “There’s even this theory that drug money was the only thing that stopped the global economy from collapsing in 2008, when the real estate market crashed. It was the only cash big banks had to stay afloat.” The other kids exchanged wide-eyed glances, and the teacher shifted uncomfortably in her chair. When he finished, the room was filled with tension. “He isn't wrong” the boy's father said in the principal's office. The principal frowned. “This wasn’t supposed to be a debate,” he said, waving off the boy’s ideas. And just like that, the conversation ended, and no one talked about what the boy said again. This story reminds me of how some people think businesses can grow completely “organically” without running ads. It would be amazing if every product could reach it's right customer without the business ever having to spend on marketing.  But even Apple has to run ads to stay relevant and grow. Just like the boy pointed out that even difficult systems have a role to play, businesses must recognize that investing in advertising is part of their survival and success, no matter how strong their organic reach might be. PS: We develop stellar ads and funnels for businesses. • "Did you just send me napkins for my birthday?" It all started when I sent my friend a pour-over coffee set as a birthday gift. She had just gotten into the world of coffee and I wanted to get her something nice, but things went sideways fast. Amazon being Amazon, the coffee filter papers arrived a day early. So, I got this frantic call from her saying, “What is wrong with you? Did you just send me napkins for my birthday?” I froze. Napkins? What napkins? Then it hit me—she was talking about the coffee filter papers. Turns out, she used them to wipe her hands and face after a messy birthday cake session. She thought I had lost my mind. At first, I thought, "How could someone be so clueless?" But then I wondered, "Is it her fault for not knowing, or mine for assuming she would?" Actually, the blame lies with the coffee company. They didn’t teach her what filters are or why she needs them in the first place. It’s the company’s job to explain their products better. Ads that tell the right story could’ve saved us from this napkin-filter fiasco. This whole mess proves how important targeting and messaging are. A good ad doesn’t just sell—it educates! In case your company wants to prevent such a fiasco, get started on getting your messaging correct using our Ask, Create & Convert guide from thethoughtbistro.com Even if you don't use our services, please start thinking about what a mess the coffee filters made on my friend's face! • Fear, Chicken Wings and Your Next Big Opportunity! Here's a little story about a boy called Vishrut (me). At 28, Vishrut had conquered many things—but cooking wasn’t one of them. Raw chicken terrified him. Was it the salmonella? The fear of failure? Probably both. One Friday, disaster struck. No takeout, no backup plan—just a pack of raw chicken wings staring him down. His stomach growled. He had no choice. Seasoning was chaos. Paprika spilled like confetti, garlic powder rained down like a storm. He wasn’t cooking; he was winging it—literally. When the pan sizzled, so did his nerves. Each turn of the tongs felt like defusing a bomb. “Is it cooked? Am I cooked?” he muttered, panicking. Finally, the wings were done. Golden, crispy, and shockingly edible. One bite—and they were delicious. I can cook?! That’s when it clicked. Cooking was just like running ads. Fear holds you back, but once you try, you realize what you’ve been missing. If you’ve been hesitant about ads, let us help you get started. • Why Handling Customers Is Just Like Handling Kids (And How to Win at Both!) When I returned to Canada after spending eight months building my business in India, my sister-in-law greeted me with a mix of relief and desperation. Her two young boys, my nephews, had turned the house into what could only be described as a daily disaster zone. Plates abandoned on the dining table, jackets strewn across chairs, lunchboxes forgotten in backpacks, and vegetables left untouched on their plates—every corner of the house told the story of two mini hurricanes. “Akhil,” she said with a sigh, “Can you do something about this? You’re always talking about strategies and systems. Surely you have one for this chaos.” It hit me then. Why not use a principle I’d mastered in marketing? An unboxing funnel. It’s a technique where you guide customers step-by-step, starting with small wins, gradually building trust, and leading them to the final, big action you want them to take. What if I applied this to the boys? I started small: “Hey, can you put your plate in the sink after dinner? It’ll make your mom’s day.” The boys did it—half-heartedly at first, but they did it. Then, I added: “Nice! Now let’s soak it in the water so it’s easier to clean.” Next came jackets: “When you hang your jacket properly, it looks like a superhero’s cape. Want to try?” Then the living room: “Imagine if this room looked so clean that it could be in a movie. Think we can make that happen?” Each new habit was a tiny step, a bite-sized win. The more they succeeded, the more confident they became. Over time, those small actions stacked up into big behaviors. Within a few weeks, the house looked transformed. The boys were clearing their plates, putting away their jackets, tidying the living room, and even finishing their veggies. My sister-in-law couldn’t believe her eyes. “Are these the same kids?” she asked one evening as they cheerfully soaked their dishes in the sink. “Yep,” I said with a grin. “Just needed the right funnel.” It turns out, the unboxing funnel works wonders—not just for customers but for little hurricanes too. • *How Akhil’s Mistake Taught Us the Power of Pre-Framing in Ads* Akhil was on the phone with his friend, and oh boy, she was *mad*. From the moment the call started, she was like a firecracker ready to pop. Why? Well, here’s the thing—Akhil has this habit of poking fun at her all the time. It’s like he’s a mosquito buzzing around her head, and she’s swatting him with a rolled-up newspaper. Every time. Honestly, it’s hilarious to watch. He gets roasted like marshmallows at a campfire, and somehow, he still doesn’t stop. Anyway, while they were in the middle of this verbal wrestling match, Akhil suddenly handed me the phone. And just like that—snap!—her tone completely changed. She was all smiles (well, the phone version of smiles), her voice soft and sweet. “Oh hi! How are you?” she said, like she was talking to a puppy or a long-lost friend. Akhil sat there, dumbfounded. “Why can’t you talk to me like that?” he blurted, waving his hands around dramatically. And you know what she said? “Because you don’t deserve it.” *Ouch*. Akhil looked like he just got hit by a truck full of feelings. Meanwhile, I was trying not to laugh too loudly. It was *perfect*. Now, here’s the thing about this whole funny situation—it’s a perfect example of how first impressions and framing work. Think of Akhil as a bad ad. He pokes, teases, and doesn’t set the right tone. So when people (or in this case, his friend) encounter him, they’re already defensive. They’re not in the mood to engage positively because he’s set the wrong vibe from the start. But when she talked to me, it was a different frame. She was open, happy, ready to engage. That’s the power of a good first impression. In the world of business, your ads are like that first conversation. If they make people feel like your product can solve their problem, they’ll lean in and say, “Tell me more.” But if your ads confuse them or worse, annoy them? Well, they’ll react like Akhil’s friend—walls up, defences on. So, moral of the story? Don’t be an “Akhil ad.” Set the right tone, show you’re here to help, and watch your audience soften up like butter in the sun. If you think your ads could do a better job of pre-framing and getting your customers in the right state of mind before they come across your product, let’s talk! Send us an email, and we’ll set up a discovery call to help you turn more “walls up” into “tell me more!” Email: info@thethoughtbistro.com Get in the comments below or head to: Twitter: https://lnkd.in/g7g6ybZQ Instagram: https://lnkd.in/g35Zs2S8 Meet the Hosts Akhil Gupta : akhil@thethoughtbistro.com Vishrut Poddar : vishrut@thethoughtbistro.com Piyush Varshney Piyush Pratap Singh Ansh Aggarwal Vidushi Arora Garvit Mittal
