TNUSSP supports the Government of Tamil Nadu in improving urban sanitation.
About us
The Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) has been a pioneer in the sanitation sector by recognising the importance of full sanitation coverage as cire to improved standards of public health. It has prioritised the full cycle of sanitation, including the strengthening of septage management as an economical and sustainable complement to network-based sewerage systems. The IIHS-led Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support Programme (TNUSSP) aids the GoTN in scaling urban sanitation, especially faecal sludge management (FSM) solutions across the state. Launched with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), TNUSSP has been set up as a technical support unit (TSU) within GoTN’s Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) department. TNUSSP provides support to GoTN, for requisite policies, regulations, and financing; infrastructure design and technology; quality assurance; capacity building and behaviour change communications. TNUSSP is currently working in relevant urban locations to test and demonstrate approaches, build credibility for innovations, and understand on-the-ground challenges. The team works with urban local bodies, the private informal sector and diverse urban communities including the urban poor, women Self Help Groups (SHGs) and sanitation workers. The programme, led by the team at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) works in collaboration with other organisations.

🚽✨ Celebrating World Toilet Day with Impact! ✨🚐 IIHS-TNUSSP, in collaboration with the Maraimalainagar Municipality, launched a powerful awareness campaign to highlight the importance of sanitation and clean toilets in public health and well-being. The event, held at the Maraimalainagar Municipality Commissioner Office, saw participation from key officials, including the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Municipality Commissioner, Sanitation Officer, and Inspectors. 🛺💡 The highlight? Tamil Nadu's very own Behaviour Change Campaign - Kakkaman was launched in the locality. As a part of the campaign, four autos equipped with vibrant awareness posters and jingles are hitting the streets! 🤩 Over the next two days, they will cover all 21 wards of Maraimalainagar, stopping at public hotspots like bus stops, temples, schools, colleges, and parks, spreading the message of safe sanitation practices ⚡ The auto drivers were also oriented to grasp the campaign's significance, enabling them to create meaningful and lasting impact through their interactions with the public. Let’s work together for a safer, sanitary tomorrow 🌍💧 Join us TNUSSP TSU to learn more! 🌍 Representing Indian Institute for Human Settlements - TNUSSP TSU at 2024 Water and Health Conference, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 🌍 It was an honour to attend the UNC Water and Health Conference in person this year - where WaSH professionals from around the world gather under one roof. This annual conference brings policymakers, practitioners, and researchers together to share insights, strengthen evidence, and develop new approaches to universal WaSH access and services. Since 2021, I have had the opportunity to contribute to side events and presentations at this conference along with the incredible team at TNUSSP, but being present in person this year was truly special. This year, alongside Niladri Chokrabarti, I was part of four side events, on behalf of our entire team: 1️⃣ Cracking the Code: Bridging Sanitation Gaps in Informal Urban Settlements: I presented case studies from our work on community and public toilets, periodic desludging, and WaSH strategy development in low-income settlements. Joining a panel afterwards, we discussed ground-level challenges and successes in multi-stakeholder engagement and systems strengthening for urban sanitation. 2️⃣ Beyond Awareness: Catalysing Demand for Sanitation Services through Behavior Change and Communication: In a world café format, I presented the Kakkaman campaign, a BCC campaign for FSM, focusing on its design, implementation, challenges, and impact assessment methods. 3️⃣ Unlocking Empowerment: Insights from Sanitation Worker Groups for the Localisation Agenda: I facilitated group work on engaging sanitation workers as co-researchers, not just subjects, highlighting actionable steps for their empowerment within institutions and research projects. 4️⃣ From Hazard to Harmony: Rethinking Sanitation Policy for Water Protection and Worker Safety: I supported my colleagues and hosted the session, there were rich discussions around localised guidelines, sanitation worker safety, and environmental protection, with contributions from organisations including PASA, the World Bank, and WHO, who shared experiences from India, Zambia, Tanzania, and Bangladesh. The best part was that we got to host these events in partnership with Uttam Kumar Saha, Tahia Afsah Khan, Andrés Hueso González Prerana Somani Rajeev Munankami & Maria Carreiro and learn from their experiences. I also attended many sessions and presentations. Each session was a valuable exchange of knowledge. Meeting young professionals, researchers, and established experts in WaSH was both motivating and humbling - gaining fresh perspectives and reconnecting with the global WaSH community that inspires me. I thank my mentors and my institution for this opportunity! #WaSH #IIHS #UNCWaterandHealth #Sanitation #BehaviorChange #PublicHealth #GlobalHealth #SustainableDevelopment
