There are more than a million informal waste workers in the country who do not have access to basic necessities and are working in an unsafe environment. Segregation of waste at source can transform the landscape for recycling in India. This will also reduce the hazards of working with mixed waste and improve working conditions for the waste workers apart from improving recycling rates manifold.
