The universe of the secondary market is growing fast with more products and platforms coming to the fore to fill in the information gaps in a market where most of the deals and activities are difficult to track. In fact, dealmaking here has also become a reference point for investors in the primary market when there was significant uncertainty around determining the value of startups right after the pandemic high saw inflated valuations in startups and tech companies. Thanks Shilpa Phadnis. The past year has been one of the more difficult year for #founders and #investors. In 2023, 169 deals across cleantech, deeptech, enterprise SaaS, and fintech, among others closed on LetsVenture and trica. Key Takeaways: On the investing side: 1. Investor commitment trends: 2023 was a year of caution and tightening commitments though we have started to see signs of revival. We have been very selective in our curation process, and have double-indexed on investing into portfolio founders. 2. Beyond the metros: The wealthy in small towns in India are ready to invest in startups due to greater awareness of the asset class. They prefer investing in and promoting local founders. 3. Lead investors' role in the angel stage: The last two years have seen more fatalities and founders struggle to reorient to the new benchmarks of funding readiness & stay relevant. Interestingly, many lead investors are absent at the time of crisis to manage their commitment to their syndicate backers. 4. Founder-turned-investors continue to be the best profile of investors. Their ability to understand founder challenges and provide support seems more natural. 5. Patient capital from family offices: This was the year when family offices came to the fore, with pre-IPO start-up tech stock or actively participating in the bridge rounds in pre-Series A to pre-Series B. This activity is significant in the absence of VCs activity. Since this capital comes with a strong ‘dhanda’ ethic, companies that have raised this capital will take a pragmatic approach to business building, a departure from a typical growth led model. I see this capital unlock as a strong foundation setting for the next decade. On the founder side: 1. At times of crisis, relationships trump. Investors are willing to give another chance, provided they are not taken by surprise and there is transparency. 2. At a time when capital is difficult to come by, serial entrepreneurs are playing it smart by focusing on maintaining a healthy runway of at least two years. Several first-time founders tend to hold on to their last valuation raised, many are going into ‘survival’ mode or shutting down. 3. Equity distribution still not understood by founders. We continue to see startups dilute high amounts of equity for small capital raised in early rounds, and equity given away to advisors early on. 2023 also saw a significant increase in domestic capital allocators to participate in secondaries - both GP-led continuation vehicles and direct secondaries. With the bid-ask price further reducing in 2024, as macros remain under stress and the ‘golden tap’ only opens a fraction, I see secondaries becoming more mainstream. The detailed startup report, completely done inhouse by the LV team. 🙏 Full report here: https://bit.ly/493UL9r Wishing an abundant, happy 2024 to all our ecosystem friends - from LetsVenture and trica! HNIs and UHNIs are not only turning to Indian startups to gain early access to promising ventures, but they wield a substantial financial clout to offer lifelines to startups amid a funding winter. Over 9,000 tech HNIs and UHNIs are low risk-takers who prefer to invest in pre-seed and Series A rounds, while nearly 2,500 of them are high risk-takers participating in seed and pre-series rounds, showed funding platform LetsVenture’s report titled Private Market Investing Outlook: Insights & Projections, 2023-24. India, it said, has 10,000 to 12,000 tech HNIs and UHNIs. The LetsVenture report showed that 70% of CXO HNI/UHNIs are driven by returns followed by their passion to mentor startups. Besides maximising returns, 75% of businessmen/ founder-CEO HNIs and UHNIs are interested in mentoring startups and contribute towards developing the startup ecosystem. About 55% of businessmen/founders prefer to stay invested for 5 years and exit a startup at a growth stage. About 60% of CXO HNIs and UHNIs prefer to stay invested for 3 to 5 years, while 70% of professionals have an investment horizon of 3-5 years. LetsVenture conducted primary interviews with over 125 HNIs and UHNIs to arrive at this data. While health tech and fintech are evergreen sectors, investors are scouting for deals in cleantech, deeptech startups and space tech. From a limited partner (LP) sentiment, India’s startup space is expected to remain strong over the next 15 years. “From an LP perspective, the good news is a strong belief in the India story," said Shanti Mohan, founder, and CEO of LetsVenture and trica. “The maturity of Indian startups, evolution of the founders and their attitudinal shift to business-building points to a maturing ecosystem.” The report has also put the spotlight on the role of lead investors in angel rounds, especially in the last two years, when many founders have struggled to survive. #startups #fundingopportunity #entrepreneurship #founders

As we look back at the year, here’s capturing the sentiment of the ecosystem. [Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gfXbqXKm] It is not linear, the world of investment and especially in private markets. But that is what makes it so exciting. So we end the year richer with experiences and lessons we can carry forward. What continued to keep pace is the fast-advancing tech and innovation in India that keeps us amused, entertained, and awestruck all at once. As did the unrelenting entrepreneurial spirit in the country. As always, never a dull moment (or year) in the Indian startup ecosystem and we are just grateful to be at the forefront of it. https://lnkd.in/gfXbqXKm Shanti Mohan Sabah Mehkeri Dipti Nair Syna Dehnugara Gandhimadhy Varadarajan Nakul Saxena Jay Magdani Tejas Panchal Pranav Mahajani #2024ready
